Today we’d like to introduce you to Makinda Vickers.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Absolutely. My story is one of faith, resilience, and vision. I started playing drums at the age of seven at my father’s church Victory Temple Apostolic Church where he was the pastor and my stepmother was the evangelist. Those early years shaped my love for music and gave me the foundation of faith, discipline, and purpose that still guide me today.
I was born and raised in Flint, Michigan a city that shaped my determination and drive. In 2010, I made the leap to Dallas, Texas, where I began pursuing my passions on a bigger stage. Music was my first love, and I started out playing drums for a few celebrities and traveling with different bands. Those opportunities taught me stage presence, work ethic, and how to transform a gift into a calling.
After building my foundation in Dallas, I relocated to Las Vegas, where I expanded my brand and business ventures, and then to Los Angeles, California, where I brought my talents full circle stepping deeper into the entertainment industry and connecting with other creatives to take everything I had built to the next level.
Today, I proudly wear many hats: I am an actress, musician, filmmaker, and screenwriter. As an author, I published my first book, Breaking Patterns, to help people navigate change and break free from cycles that hold them back. Since then, I’ve continued to write, with several new books on the way, including Think Without Behavior, Dion’s Redemption, Lyric Monae, and my upcoming audio biography and self-development book The Beat of Drumsticksnlipstick, which will soon be available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. All of my books are proudly published through AuthorHouse. A tv reality show I created and wrote called Lyfe Verse Drummin, shadows of Desire short film, stage play called Hymms Of The Heart, a documentary I created and edited that’s coming and so on. Im just excited of all the new talents I never thought I had come to life
My journey also led me to launch MV Visionary Consulting Firm, where I coach individuals and teams on walking into their purpose and building strategies for success. I later expanded into fashion with DSNL my luxury clothing brand featuring bold, high-class pieces with our signature diamond patch. We are now preparing to open our first boutique in Las Vegas and continue expanding our presence on the West Coast.
Everything I do whether it’s acting, music, fashion, writing, or filmmaking is about purpose and legacy. My goal is to inspire others to dream bigger, push past fear, and break through limitations. The road from Flint to Dallas, Las Vegas, and now Los Angeles has not been easy, but every challenge brought me closer to the woman I’m called to be and to the legacy I’m building for my daughter, Nevaeh.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road but I wouldn’t trade the journey. I’ve faced everything from financial setbacks and major life transitions to moments where I had to completely start over. Moving from Flint to Dallas, then to Las Vegas, and finally to Los Angeles meant leaving behind comfort zones and familiar faces to step into new territories, often with very little support.
There were times I felt overlooked, underestimated, or misunderstood especially as a woman building multiple businesses and stepping into industries like fashion, publishing, and film that can be very competitive. I’ve experienced failed partnerships, sleepless nights, and moments where I questioned if I should keep going.
But I believe those struggles built my character. They taught me resilience, sharpened my faith, and reminded me that my purpose is bigger than any obstacle. Every closed door pushed me to create my own opportunities whether that was publishing my books, launching my consulting firm, or building DSNL into a luxury brand. Now, I use those experiences to inspire others and show them that setbacks are just setups for the next level.
As you know, we’re big fans of MV visionary consulting Firm and DSNL Boutique . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I actually have more than one! My first business is MV Visionary Consulting Firm, which is all about helping people “walk into their purpose.” Through one-on-one coaching, team sessions, and masterclasses, I work with clients to build clarity, strategy, and confidence so they can unlock their next level in business and life. I also offer digital resources like my Breaking Patterns bundle to help people shift their mindset and create lasting change.
My long-term vision for MV Visionary is to expand into a global coaching and empowerment platform hosting international retreats, speaking engagements, and creating a network of visionary leaders who are impacting their communities worldwide.
My second business is DSNL, my luxury clothing brand. DSNL is a boutique label that focuses on high-class fashion, quality fabrics, and bold statement pieces featuring our signature diamond leather patch. We’re preparing to open the first DSNL Boutique in Las Vegas, where customers will experience an upscale, fashion-forward space that celebrates individuality, luxury, and excellence.
The long-term vision for DSNL is to expand with boutiques in multiple cities, including Los Angeles, Miami, and New York, while collaborating with celebrities, stylists, and fashion houses to make DSNL a name synonymous with high-class, innovative style.
Both of these businesses represent different sides of my purpose MV Visionary empowers people from the inside out, while DSNL helps them express that confidence and boldness on the outside.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Absolutely no one becomes successful completely on their own, and I’m beyond grateful for the incredible support system and platforms that have helped me shine.
First and foremost, my faith and my family have been my foundation. My father and stepmother planted the seeds of faith in me early on at Victory Temple Apostolic Church, and that spiritual grounding continues to guide every decision I make. My daughter, Nevaeh, is my biggest inspiration everything I build is for her and for the legacy I want to leave behind.
I also want to celebrate the amazing clients, supporters, and collaborators who have believed in my vision from the start. Every coaching session booked, every DSNL piece worn, every book purchased those moments have fueled me to keep pushing forward even when the road got tough.
I’m also thankful for the exposure that has helped my businesses grow being featured on radio stations, in magazines, on billboards, and at speaking engagements has given me the chance to tell my story to thousands and inspire others to go after their dreams. Those opportunities reminded me that my work matters and that my voice has the power to spark change.
And of course, my online and in-person community the ones who share my posts, show up to events, and cheer me on they’re a huge part of why I refuse to give up. Their energy is contagious and keeps me motivated to keep building, keep creating, and keep inspiring.
This version feels bold, confident, and spotlight-ready perfect for a magazine that wants to showcase you as a rising star with momentum.
