Community Highlights: Meet Johan Martinez-Khalilian of DVLPMNT

Today we’d like to introduce you to Johan Martinez-Khalilian.

Hi Johan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in Chicago, a rambunctious Puerto Rican and Persian kid from the hood. Yes, I’m a Persia Rican, a rare mix powered by arroz con gandules, saffron rice, and generational trauma.

That combination came with a lot of flavor and a lot of questions. Growing up in Humboldt Park, surrounded by gang violence, drugs, and addiction, made me curious about people from an early age. I wanted to understand what drives us, what breaks us, and what helps us grow back stronger.

Home was loud, full of love, laughter, and opinions, often all happening at once. It was the kind of environment that trained you to read a room before you could read a book. And somewhere between my dad’s Persian wisdom and my mom’s Puerto Rican passion, I learned how to connect with just about anyone.

College became my laboratory for understanding people. I majored in communications, minored in sociology, and majored in asking too many questions. I was fascinated by what made people tick, not just what they said but what they meant.

By my senior year, I was 22 and already speaking at local schools, sharing stories about purpose and identity. I had no plan, just passion and a belief that words could move people. Before I knew it, I was traveling across the country, speaking to students about hope, discipline, and the power of choice.

The talks kept growing, and so did I. I ended up giving a TEDx talk and eventually took my message around the world. But somewhere along the way, I started to notice a pattern. People would leave inspired, but a few weeks later, they would slide right back into the same habits. That is when it hit me. Motivation isn’t transformation.

I didn’t want to just hype people up for a weekend. I wanted to help them change for a lifetime. And to do that, I needed to understand what really drives human behavior, what causes people to repeat cycles, what unlocks true change. That realization sent me deep into the world of psychology and ontology, the study of being.

That season of curiosity changed everything. I went from wanting to inspire people to wanting to understand them, to really study the gap between knowing better and doing better.

That exploration gave birth to DVLPMNT, my coaching firm. The name says it all. We help people develop from the inside out. The work is about mastering the inner game so you can perform freely in the outer one. Because I have learned that when you work out what is in here, you can work out anything out there.

Today, I coach professional athletes in Major League Baseball, the NBA, and the NHL, along with executives and teams who are chasing greatness without losing themselves in the process. My work is less about performance for the crowd and more about peace within the person.

For some reason, as I write this, I’m thinking of Nacho Libre saying one of my favorite lines from the movie: “I don’t want to get paid to lose. I want to win!” The real win for me is seeing people become their true selves and create lasting change.

If there is a secret to what I do, it is this. I never stopped being a student of life. The moment you think you have arrived, you stop developing. And that is one thing I will never do.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth? Not even close. My road had potholes, detours, and a few flat tires along the way. But I wouldn’t trade any of it.

I remember my first big challenge, explaining to my Persian father that I wanted to be a public speaker. I’ll never forget him saying, in his thick accent, “You’re going to be a speaker? You’re not a stereo system.”

No lie. He was trying to make light of the fact that he had no idea what a speaker was as a profession, and he wasn’t having it. He told me I needed to go back to school and get a master’s in business, which is an ultra Persian dad thing to say.

I told him I’d never pursue money over meaning. I was clear about what brought me to life, and I was going to follow it.

In the beginning, his disapproval stung. Over time, I realized he was doing the best he could to protect me. My father immigrated from Iran with no high school diploma, just guts and a work ethic forged from the Persian Empire.

As my career started to unfold, he began to see the impact for himself. Eventually, he’d pull out his phone to show his friends my website and proudly say, “This is my son. He’s a speaker, a walking stereo system that helps people.”

That first challenge on my hero’s journey ended with me and my father growing closer, all because I stayed true to who I was and the impact I wanted to make in the world. That moment taught me that alignment isn’t about getting others to understand you, it’s about staying true to what you understand about yourself.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about DVLPMNT?
DVLPMNT is a coaching firm built around one simple idea: when you work out what’s in here, you can work out anything out there.

We specialize in helping professional athletes, executives, and teams master the inner game. Our work sits at the intersection of psychology, ontology, and performance, helping people not just achieve more, but become more. We don’t coach the surface, we coach the source.

What sets DVLPMNT apart is the way we blend mindset, language, and embodiment into real, lasting change. Most people try to change behavior without understanding the being that drives it. We go deeper. Because when you shift who you are being, everything you do starts to align.

I’m most proud of the integrity of our work. We’re not interested in producing temporary highs or quick results. We help people create lives and cultures that sustain excellence. Our coaches are trained to work with the whole human — the athlete, the leader, the parent, the person behind the performance.

Our clients come to us for a reason. Some want to win more. Others want to feel whole again. Either way, they learn that performance without alignment eventually collapses. True development happens when your values, vision, and way of being all move in the same direction.

DVLPMNT isn’t just a company. It’s a movement toward wholeness, purpose, and inner mastery. We exist to help people become who they were created to be, not just what the world expects them to be.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
The best way to work with me or with DVLPMNT is to start a conversation. Whether it’s one-on-one coaching, team development, or speaking engagements, we always begin with connection. Every collaboration starts with understanding where someone is, what they value, and where they want to go.

We work with professional athletes, teams, and organizations that want to create winning cultures from the inside out. For those outside of sports, I also work with executives, entrepreneurs, and creatives who want to lead with clarity, integrity, and alignment.

If someone is looking to bring this kind of work into their organization or just explore what inner development might look like, I’m always open to meaningful collaborations. The best place to reach me is through our website, www.dvlpmnt.studio, or on Instagram at @johanspeaks.

And for anyone who wants to support what we’re building, share the message. Talk about the importance of mastering the inner game, about leading with authenticity and alignment. Because the more people understand that real change starts from within, the more developed our world becomes.
