Community Highlights: Meet Jean Griffin Borho of Jean Griffin Borho Psychotherapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jean Griffin Borho.

Hi Jean, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), and since 2019 I’ve had the privilege of working with individuals, couples, and groups. Many of the people I work with come to therapy seeking greater insight into themselves, wanting to identify the obstacles that hold them back, and hoping to develop healthier ways of coping with life’s challenges. My practice primarily focuses on supporting individuals who are experiencing depression and anxiety, often rooted in unprocessed trauma.
As an IFS-informed therapist, I draw from a range of approaches—including insight-oriented therapy, EMDR, CBT, and DBT—to meet each client’s unique needs. My goal is always to provide a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental space where healing can unfold. I feel deeply passionate about helping clients create meaningful and lasting changes in their lives.

I also enjoy working with couples who are struggling with communication, trust, or intimacy. I believe that strong, healthy relationships are essential to overall well-being. In my work with couples, I use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and the Gottman Method to help partners reconnect, strengthen their bond, and navigate challenges together.

In addition to my individual and couples work, I facilitate therapy groups on topics such as life transitions for women, caring for aging parents, building self-esteem after a cancer diagnosis, mindfulness, anxiety, and anger management. These groups offer a supportive community where clients can share experiences and learn from one another.

I am also certified in Animal Assisted Interventions and, when appropriate, I incorporate my service dog, Bina, into sessions. Many clients find her calming presence to be an added source of comfort and connection.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
After spending nearly 25 years working in the art worlds of New York City, Berlin, and Los Angeles, I made the decision to transition into clinical social work. Returning to graduate school in my mid-40s to pursue a second master’s degree at the University of Southern California was both exciting and daunting. At first, I needed time to adjust to being a student again and stepping into such a different professional path.

Once I found my footing after that first semester, I not only did very well academically but also discovered how much I loved the work. During my year-long internship at a private mental health facility, I realized how meaningful it was to sit with clients, hear their stories, and support them through their challenges. That experience confirmed for me that this was exactly where I was meant to be, and it continues to inspire the work I do today.

We’ve been impressed with Jean Griffin Borho Psychotherapy, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Jean Griffin Borho Psychotherapy is a private practice dedicated to creating a safe, supportive space where you can feel heard and understood. My approach is compassionate and collaborative, focusing on helping you explore challenges, build resilience, and discover new possibilities for growth. Together, we’ll work at your pace to cultivate greater clarity, balance, and well-being in your life.
