Community Highlights: Meet Chaniece Tarpley of Train With Nene

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chaniece Tarpley.

Hi Chaniece , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was always a very active kid growing up, I was always outside and playing sports. I was constantly moving my body and so when it came time for college, I decided to take it a step further. I attended The Pennsylvania State University from 2011-2015 and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology. I worked with the strength and conditioning staff while I was there for a couple of years and built my foundation in strength training with them. I briefly worked for what at the time was a start up fitness company Pittsburgh Fitness Project and learned a lot about building a business! I took the tools that I learned and a little over a year later, moved to Los Angeles from Pittsburgh, PA. I worked at an Equinox and while I made amazing friends and built quite a client list, I didn’t love corporate fitness and decided to head off on my own with my own business Train With Nene. I’ve been doing that ever since! I get to help people, on a daily basis, not only reach their goals but build better lives and habits around health. Teaching people how to move well is my passion and watching them fall in love with the process is the greatest reward. I also have my Level 2 Crossfit certification and coach crossfit classes as well. Community is huge to me and crossfit gives me that and I get to spill that same sense of community into my private clients. I want to help as many people move their bodies as I can, and be as affordable as I can be!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I mean, owning your own business is no joke. My degree in Kinesiology did not teach me the business side of things, so that’s been quite a ride of its own. I’ve had to learn to market and sell myself which can be uncomfortable at times but I’ve learned just being myself is enough for most people! It can be a very up and down business so you have to really love it.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a personal trainer and Crossfit coach who has a lot of tools in her toolbox to help as many people as possible. I pride myself on meeting clients where they’re at and bringing a lot to the table to help them get where they want to be. I’m a queer black woman who owns her own training business in a business that’s not built for us. I greatly prioritize resistance training and appreciate that I can bring that to more women, especially black women and women of color. I love that I can be exactly who I am and attract like minded clients. I think of most of my clients as friends because we build that type of relationship through movement. I offer discounts on training based on frequency so people can try to get into the gym more often at a more affordable price. I also work on a sliding scale for the people who need it.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I’m always looking for more yelp reviews if we’ve worked together and just all around word of mouth for more business! Share things that I post on my socials anything to help me get my business out there in a pretty oversaturated area.

Pricing:

  • $105/hour
  • $90/hour with 2x/week training
  • $80/week with 3x/week training
  • Sliding scale also available
