Today we’d like to introduce you to Tatiana Mota-Diaz.
Hi Tatiana, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have always been very intrigued and invested in art, my whole life! Since I was a little girl, I always knew I wanted to showcase my talents in various ways, i jumped from career ideas that all based around creating, visually telling a story, and making impact with my artwork. When I first started college, I had originally planned to pursue a Criminology degree, because I have always found true passion in the sociology behind why crimes are committed, and what can we do as a society to bring crime numbers down. As I continued with this educational journey, I always found myself dreading the classes, but enjoying the projects and presenting them in a creative way. I numerous times considered switching my major to my true passion, which is art, but I was always so terrified since I already was on my third year. Finally, I trusted myself and switched my major to Visual Arts! Allowing to me freely create ceramics, paintings, digital art etc.. as a career.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Switching my major, and trusting in myself was one of the most difficult decisions I had to come by. I come from a immigrant household, and I will be a first generation student graduating from a University. It is a lot of pressure from family to maintain a good education and to have a good, successful career, especially after all their sacrifices. Growing up, Ive always heard that, “Art was a hobby, not a career” and that I would not make it far. It would just be temporary. That stayed with me for q long time, bringing me a lot of fear, preventing me from pursuing the career I knew Id thrive in. Until I finally trusted myself, and recognized that I have full control over my life and I will thrive in my art major, creating art for myself and others.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As I am beginning my professional Art career, especially while being in school, I have been focusing on creating digital art and also ceramic artwork to represent my art style. I also plan on pursuing a creative directing career, as I already enjoy creating ideas for others and making their visions come to life. I do this a lot recently with animations I create for people for their social media platforms.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Authenticity is the one and only characteristic that is most important for me when it comes to my success! I have been told my whole life that people are drawn to me, they find me entertaining, and enjoy being around. This would be not true, if I was not authentic! I love to be unapologetically myself, because it attracts an audience where people feel comfortable and confident in themselves. This is just as important to showcase in my work, so that it can look real , fun and intriguing to the public eye.
