Check Out Sylvia Heranchian’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sylvia Heranchian.

Hi sylvia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up with a tom boy mom , my thick long hair was too much for her to take care of. One day she decided to cut it short. After that , going to the hair dresser was a nightmare for me. I kicked and screamed every time. Finally in high school I started cutting my own hair. My friends would always compliment it so then I started cutting theirs.

After I graduated, I attended Glendale community college to major in psychology. At the same time, my dad got me a job working as an administrative assistant for a fire protection company.

I was making great money at a young age.

I soon realized I really hated working a 9 to 5.

The corporate life wasn’t for me.

Paul Mitchell the school had just opened up in the Sherman Oaks Galleria.

I asked my dad if we could go check it out.

As soon as I walked in , it was like
“ hallelujahhhh”

It felt right.

My dad asked “ is this what you want ?”
And without a single doubt , I said “ yes. “

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Tuition was $19k

We put a $2000 deposit and my journey began.

After completing 1600 hours , it was time to pay the rest off.

Unfortunately my parents didn’t have the money. We also didn’t qualify for Sallie Mae ( a student loan company)

We didn’t have a consigner.
Didn’t have the cash.

Every day a collection agent would call the house.

A full year to be exact.

My mom and the collection agent would speak everyday.
My mom would tell him we don’t have the money.
Without paying tuition , i wasn’t able to take my stateboard test to get my license.

Finally after year of back and forth
The agent asked , “ what can you pay ?”

My mom was able to gather $8000.
And with that they finally settled.

The day of my state board exam , from nerves my right hand went numb.

My three fingers on my right hand went completely numb.

As soon as the exam began, I dropped everything on the floor.

In that situation, you can either fail on the spot , or apply the sanitation standards you learned in school.

One by one I would get a tissue paper , pick up the item , sanitize it , throw the tissue away and repeat that process until I sanitized every thing I had dropped.

During my break I went to my mom’s car where she had been waiting for me , and started crying.
I thought I had failed.
In my surprise I did not.

I passed.
What a moment.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve been a cosmetologist for 18 years.
I specialize in weddings and do bridal hair.

I had my first break in 2014 when I got booked an international wedding in Positano Italy. Ive also worked extravagant weddings in Champagne France and the Cotswold England , along with many other magical places around the world.

Yes I am talented in my craft , but more so I think I get booked for my energy and my positive personality I bring on wedding day.

Ones wedding day is a special day.
It’s an honor to work along side a bride on her big day.

I bring peace to the environment.

I am definitely a hopeless romantic.

After a wedding, usually follows a baby shower and then I’m apart of the family.

It’s not just hair.

I make a woman feel like a queen.
I polish her crown then put it right back on her head and give her the confidence to go out in the world.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love LA.
As a native , it’s all a know.

How lucky am i to see the Hollywood sign everyday. To use the walk of fame as my route to my nearest Trader Joe’s.

LA is a magical city. Somewhere people all over the world wish they can come too.

I’m here. I’ve made it we a hairstylist making a career doing what I love.

The homeless situation is unfortunate.
It’s something I don’t desensitize myself too. I wish things were different, but I have hope one day they will be.
