Today we’d like to introduce you to Scarlet Moreno.
Hi Scarlet, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember. As a child I would put together wild outfits with my mom’s clothes and pretend I was walking a runway around my bedroom. I loved singing and performing in any capacity. It truly was in me from the start. I was born and raised in Laredo, a then small-ish border town in South Texas, and left to study Acting & Journalism at NYU. New York City was an incredible place to be as a young adult exploring her artistic voice. I started wardrobe styling after I graduated, as fashion was always a part of how I expressed myself and then decided that in order to really pursue my acting and filmmaking dreams, I would move to Los Angeles.
Since moving here I’ve worked as a director and creative director, made music when I could, and continued acting and performing. I love creating and have really learned to let the muse lead me when it comes to how my next project will materialize. As a director, I love telling complex, female-led stories, as I think our stories are so beautiful and nuanced, and still very under-explored.
I also have a small batch fashion line called Scarletinni Originals and just released my latest collection. I use vintage and deadstock fabrics to create one-of-a-kind pieces that I make by hand. That started during the pandemic, with a sewing machine on my dining table, and I truly fell in love.
As far as performing, my wonderful friend Marnie Price and I put on a C*ntry Cabaret show here in LA, often at the amazing Tramp Stamp Granny’s. We sport giant wigs, sing an array of tunes and have a ridiculous time doing it. Look out for our next gig soon!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the definition of a smooth road depends on who is traveling it. Have there been some difficult experiences in my life? Of course. Have I experienced the sometimes crippling self-doubt of an artist? Absolutely. But I have also experienced immense joy, fulfillment, and wonder. I have been incredibly blessed with the support of family and friends in all of my endeavors. I have parents that always encouraged me to follow my dreams, however farfetched they may have seemed.
I think the main struggle of an artist is to put out work with absolutely no inkling of how it will be received. The struggle is also to continue doing so despite society’s or anyone else’s definition of success. The struggle is the time and faith and self-work it takes to become so centered in yourself and in your worth that nothing can shake it or take it from you. I don’t know if those struggles ever really go away completely, as life is ever-evolving and we are ever-growing, but I do know that they make the moments of utter joy that punctuate life all the more beautiful.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I think in all of my work, I love creating unique worlds. With my narrative films, my music videos, even in my creative direction on photoshoots for other artists, I love building a beautifully stylized world to invite the viewer into. Even with my fashion line, Scarletinni Originals, the wearer is invited into a surreal world. There are feathers and psychedelic patterns and vintage fabrics to get lost in. I think part of my purpose in life is to create beauty and put it into existence for others to enjoy. There is nothing I love more than someone feeling inspired by something I made and in turn, making their own beautiful thing.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Follow your intuition. Make the thing you’ve been waiting on making. Stop waiting. It’s in the doing that the magic happens. You will learn along the way. Only by making it will you find your voice.
