Today we’d like to introduce you to Sammy Miller.
Hi Sammy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a kid, I always favored the arts over any other subject. I was a very quiet child but also very observant. I don’t remember exactly when I first picked up a camera, but I know the passion built quickly for capturing the beauty of the world and the people in it. I’ve carried this sense of wonder and playfulness into my adult life through my work as a photographer and digital designer. What started as curiosity became a way of seeing: noticing light, movement, and the quiet moments between moments.
I’ve also more recently become a website and social graphics designer which I feel was heavily influenced by my passion for arts and crafts and scrapbook-like projects throughout my life. I’m so inspired by small details and the stories that people carry and I love helping them get those stories out in the world in the most beautiful and authentic way possible.
Whether I’m designing a website or photographing a moment, my goal is always the same: to create something impactful and a little magical.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Though my passion has never wavered, the creative industry is a hard one to break into and has definitely presented some challenges. Figuring out my place in the professional world is something I’m still working on, it can be discouraging to get a lot of rejections while seeing other creatives thrive. It’s hard just as a person right now too to not compare yourself to everything you see online and in other people’s lives. Something I’m actively working on is being my authentic self and not worrying about where other people are on their journey compared to my own because I’m not going to attract the people and work I want that way. Being confident in my own style and skills is an ongoing challenge I’m sure most people can relate to.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in event, brand, and portrait photography. I focus on the moments that happen naturally, the subtle interactions, important details, honest expressions, and fleeting elements that often go unnoticed.
My work is rooted in visual storytelling, blending a natural documentary style with a refined, intentional aesthetic. Whether I’m photographing an event, a brand, or an individual portrait, I aim to create images that feel lived in, human, and timeless.
I am most proud of the business I started specifically designed around brand photography, website design, and social graphics. It’s called Roots Creative Agency and it’s the culmination of my creative passions and my desire to help other self-starters thrive. Roots exists to cultivate meaningful connections between brands and the people they serve through intentional, story-driven design. I create with intention, clarity, and purpose so people’s photos or website not only look beautiful, but feel aligned at every point. I’m here to help develop a presence that reflects their values, connects with their audience, and grows in a way that feels sustainable and true.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I could go on and on about the tools I use for work but I think rest and down time are just as important to my creative process as the actual work. I am huge on arts and crafts and come up with a new hobby to hyperfixate on every few months. Most recently, it’s been making jewelry and press-on nails. I am also obsessed with reading as a way to unwind but also exercise my creative brain in a way that doesn’t feel too taxing. Libby, Kindle, and fantasy books have my heart.
