Check Out Nigar Mammadova’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nigar Mammadova

We’re so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Nigar, and I am an actor and entrepreneur. I combine both of my professions to support one another. I aspired to create a business that would allow me to leave the traditional 9-5 job and provide the flexibility needed for my acting career. I started Flesh & Soul LLC during the pandemic, a time that pushed many of us to explore new passions and opportunities.

Before venturing into the world of jewelry, I had extensive experience in marketing and sales, having worked for major beauty corporations and taking professional acting classes in Los Angeles. This background provided me with valuable skills and insights that served as a strong foundation for starting my own business. I’ve always had a passion for jewelry, and the actor’s mind deepened my understanding of storytelling and the importance of details in creating meaningful pieces.

My journey began with a $600 investment, purchasing and reselling jewelry that aligned with my taste to test the market. Positive feedback encouraged me to create my own designs, inspired by mythology, history, and the horror genre. I partnered with a manufacturer to bring my sketches to life, ensuring each design told a unique story. Moving to Los Angeles years ago was a significant step in my life, as the city’s artistic vibe continually inspires creation.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to success is never easy. It’s crucial to have a clear vision and a compelling story for your brand. Finding the right people to trust and work with is essential. Starting alone was challenging but educational, as I was responsible for everything. I designed everything on a design platform myself, despite not being a graphic designer. This learning curve allowed me to control my brand’s aesthetic and ensure every detail aligned with my vision.

Additionally, while working on my business, I delved deep into photography. I handle most of the photography myself, a time-consuming but enjoyable task that captures the essence of each piece. Images are crucial in our picture-oriented world. I have modeled for my brand and created short videos with stories about each piece. This combines my two favorite things: cinematography and jewelry.

One of the biggest challenges was finding the right supplier who understood my needs and maintained professional standards. Initially, I made my own boxes, complete with a seal stamp on each package. As the business grew, I had to order boxes, which brought new challenges like designing the right look and finding a reliable supplier. Packaging is crucial as it creates a memorable unboxing experience.

The most challenging aspect is knowing what you are doing and having a solid plan. Balancing all these tasks takes time and effort, but enjoying the process makes it manageable.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I create unique, handcrafted jewelry inspired by mythology, ancient stories, and philosophy. Each piece is a blend of artistic expression and storytelling, making it a personal talisman for the wearer. Our collection features items crafted from 925k sterling silver and adorned with natural stones such as onyx, moonstone, and labradorite. Standout pieces include the Hecate necklace, symbolizing the goddess of witchcraft, and the Zeus necklace, embodying strength and protection.

My fascination with the gothic and eerie, which began when I watched Nightmare on Elm Street at age five, is reflected in everything I create. Influential figures like Tim Burton, H.R. Giger, and Edgar Allan Poe have also played significant roles in shaping my artistic vision, inspiring me to infuse dark, surreal, and deeply narrative elements into my designs.

Additionally, my collection features jewelry made from human teeth, which holds philosophical meaning to me. It symbolizes human connection and the concept of recycling rather than killing a creature for its bone. This unique aspect of my work further underscores the deep narrative and ethical considerations in my designs. I also incorporate erotic aesthetics into my work, which takes place in my designs and photoshoots, adding a layer of bold, provocative expression.

What sets my work apart is the integration of mythological themes with contemporary design, creating jewelry that is both meaningful and modern. I never chase trends; instead, I focus on creating pieces that I love and would wear myself. This dedication is reflected in the positive feedback and stories from customers, who cherish how my pieces have become significant parts of their lives.

My creative process involves extensive research into myths and legends, sketching designs, and selecting materials that best represent the theme. I also use my dreams to create art, allowing my subconscious to guide me in developing unique and compelling designs. Collaborating with skilled artisans in Istanbul, we bring these designs to life with great care. Each piece undergoes a thoughtful design process to ensure it embodies its story.

Overall, what makes Flesh & Soul unique is this blend of storytelling, craftsmanship, and personal connection. My jewelry isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating meaningful connections and offering pieces that hold significant personal value for the wearer. Hearing how my creations have played significant roles in my customers’ lives brings me immense satisfaction. While there is still a long road ahead, I am excited for what the future holds.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Jewelry has always had a significant role in history, from early humans who carved their jewelry and adornments from bones to ancient civilizations like Egypt where pharaohs were buried with their jewelry. In modern times, jewelry remains an important investment and a symbol of personal expression.

Over the next 5-10 years, several exciting shifts and trends will shape the jewelry industry:
Sustainability and Ethical Sourcing: Consumers are increasingly conscious of environmental and ethical implications. This is driving demand for sustainably sourced and ethically produced jewelry. We use high-quality materials like 925k sterling silver and natural stones, prioritizing ethical production practices. This trend towards sustainability is expected to grow, with more brands adopting eco-friendly practices.

Personalization and Customization: There is a growing trend for personalized jewelry that reflects individual stories and identities. Customizable pieces will likely see increased demand. Our gothic-inspired designs align well with this trend, offering unique narratives that resonate personally with wearers.

Technological Advancements: Technology is transforming the jewelry industry, with 3D printing allowing for greater innovation and precision in design. Augmented reality (AR) is enhancing the online shopping experience, enabling customers to virtually try on pieces before purchase.

Digital and Online Presence: The shift towards e-commerce continues to grow. A strong online presence and digital marketing strategies are crucial for reaching a broader audience. We embraced this by becoming a five-star seller on Etsy and engaging with customers through social media. The future will see even more integration of digital tools to enhance customer engagement.
Rise of Niche and Independent Brands: There is a growing appreciation for niche and independent jewelry brands that offer unique, handcrafted pieces. Consumers are seeking alternatives to mass-produced items, drawn to brands with a strong narrative and artisanal quality.

Importance of Jewelry in Cinematography: Jewelry will continue to play a significant role in cinematography, adding depth to characters and settings. It serves as a powerful visual tool that can convey a character’s personality, status, or transformation. This is particularly relevant in genres like gothic horror, sci-fi, and historical films, where symbolic jewelry can enhance the storytelling.

Overall, the future of the jewelry industry looks promising. We are excited to evolve and adapt, ensuring our jewelry remains meaningful and relevant.
