Check Out Meirav Zur’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meirav Zur.

Hi Meirav, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. Following university studies, I moved to Israel. When I started my career there as an actor, going to auditions and booking various roles here and there, I quickly realized that I did not want to wait around for these opportunities and decided to create my own. I saw that there was a need for children’s theater in English to supplement and provide cultural context for the established English curriculum in the Israeli school system. So I combined all of my skills and background to write and produce a play in English. I also performed in it along with a couple of wonderful actors I knew. It was very successful and there was demand for more, so that’s how I essentially founded a professional English-language traveling theater in Israel, eventually developing a substantial repertoire of different original stage productions and theater education programs for audiences of all ages that was active for over 15 years. Now living back in the US, my family and I are new to Los Angeles and love getting to know the city and surrounding areas. Professionally, it’s of course been challenging but also exciting!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think most roads are unpaved. The challenge I had when I started working as an actor was that potential work wasn’t always available or solely based on my talent or skill. My solution was creating on my own work. That was of course yet another path with its own challenges, but naturally so. The theater I founded was very challenging mainly because for most of the first years, I had to simultaneously take on many of the necessary roles, including producer, artistic director, actor, writer, director, costume/set designer, marketer, salesperson, stage manager, driver, crew, etc. I was able to overcome these challenges with massive passion, support from family and friends, and collaborating with other talented arts professionals who I was fortunate to meet over the years. Moving back to the US was also challenging in itself, especially since it was mid-pandemic when everything changed everywhere. Professional, personal, and even global considerations and issues all intertwined and affected one another. It’s always interesting to be on a sort of new path, maybe even uncomfortable, but there are the “tools” and people that can guide along the way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an actor, producer, and writer. I love creating and performing in shows that are unique, especially shows that can make people laugh. I have been working mainly in theater and live performances. One of the projects that I’m proud of is a live solo autobiographical comedy, succinctly titled Inconceivable: The Totally True One-Woman Semi-Fertile Quasi-“Musical”. This production was the first time I created and performed a solo show and an autobiographical taboo comedy at that. I know the full potential of this production hasn’t been maximized yet so I’m working on that!

To answer what sets me apart from others, I think that is that I am me, to put it simply. Every person is different in their own way, and that’s also how everyone is all alike. Every person has a unique story and their own individual “superpower”.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
The best resources are people. My family and friends, old and new, are my biggest resource for everything.
