Today we’d like to introduce you to Marlon Sims.
Hi Marlon , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My training story begins when I was four years old and I decided that I wanted to be a superhero. I was a very tiny human and didn’t really start growing until I was a genuine senior in high school. Up until that point I have been picked on a lot and was in many altercations, depending myself because of how small I was and Sometimes simply because my name was different from everybody else’s. This made me want to study martial arts and self-defense to be able to protect myself. After wrestling through junior high in high school and then turning professional as a kickboxer and movie Thai boxer I’ve been transitioned to mix martial arts and ended up fighting at the highest levels for the UFC And strike force. Along the way I picked up three black belts in Campo Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Russian Sambo. In my professional career lasting 17 years, I win three world titles and was on a reality show on TV called the ultimate fighter for their fifth season. I became known For being controversial and highly entertaining on the show. After accomplishing most everything I had said out to do in Fighting I made a promise to my father that I was going to move to Los Angeles and become a stuntman and an actor like he had become before me. Unfortunately my father passed away in my arms just a few weeks later, and I honored that promise by immediately moving to Los Angeles from San Francisco to follow that career path. After my father passed away in my arms, I found that I could no longer hurt people, anymore for the reason of money and prizes. Through my career, fighting and training my entire life since the age of four I developed many different training techniques from all over the world and all of the sports that I studied. I also later became a kinesiologist and healer through my knowledge of rehab that I had to undertake from various injuries suffered through my career. Through this path, I became an empath healer, and I honed my teaching skills and wanted to make self-defense martial arts and exercise attainable for all those who sought the endeavor. I wanted to focus on people with disabilities whether it be mental or physical, as well as the elderly. I also became exceptional at post operation back spine, and hip surgeries for rehab. This is where I really felt like I was making a difference with helping those who needed it most. Since devoting my life to this, I have grown a wonderful list of clients whom I have worked with for many years on end. I love helping people as well as healing and teaching them how to stay healthy. This is the most fulfilling time in my life as giving people the means to learn what they want physically and to become mentally strong in the process. I am so thankful for this.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Along the way I had to give up secure professions and a steady income to invest all of my time and effort into cultivating the clients I now have. It took six years to build my Client list to what it is now where I can make a living, however, modest, it may be. I make much less than I used to, but what I do is so rewarding that that compensate for any loss I may have suffered. When starting a business of training and healing people clients often come and go, and it can be very hit and miss for a very long time and it did seem like perhaps I wouldn’t be able to do this thing that I loved. I stuck with it though, and I believed in myself, and I had wonderful people who I was training that believed in me as well, and I am thankful to say that at least I can support myself and live a decent life.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in teaching and training all forms of physicality and martial arts and post-op spine and hip rehab. I specialize in learning how my clients understand and comprehend, and then I structure my teach teaching around how they learn. This gives me ability to teach anyone anytime and anywhere. Teaching the physically and mentally disabled is another specialty. I am most proud of giving these disabled individuals the self-confidence and fiscal abilities to do things. They never thought they could. What set me apart from others is that unless you have trained 47 years of your life in martial arts and various sports regiments and live the life I have lived and it is impossible for you to do what I do. my ability of empath healing comes from my entire life of studying my own body and the energies it produces and gives off. Being an empath healer is not something you can teach. It is something inherent in you and I cannot pass it on to other people unless they are also empath healers. This sets me apart in the way that my abilities cannot really be duplicated unless you have spent your entire life learning and applying the things that I have done in my life. Teaching somebody about the body and how it breaks and how to fix it is one thing, but then understanding an individuals pain and suffering in an empathetic way to motivate you to help them cannot be given and that’s what sets me apart.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I think our city is one of the most beautiful and accepting and tolerant places in the country if not earth. The diversity of life and the acceptance of its people is what makes West Hollywood so great. What I like least is that people will come to safe places and try to disturb disrupt and frighten those who are here enjoying themselves and and try to intimidate them because they are different people. This is one of the reasons I teach self-defense.
