Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallery Jenna Robinson. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Mallery Jenna Robinson born January 13, 1990 in Montgomery, AL is an AfraCarribean American Transgender advocate and activist and openly HIV positive since 2011. She is the only daughter to Terese Robinson and George Brown. She has one older brother and three younger brothers. Mallery began her gender journey on April 28, 2006 at the age of 16 during the Bush Administration in Montgomery, AL. She was allowed to present herself, even taking her senior pictures as a female, and having a date for prom thanks to her high school classmates in support of her transition. She went to Brewbaker Technology Magnet High School and graduated in 2008 with her Advance Diploma with an emphasis on the Medical Magnet. Mallery completed one year of undergraduate at Jacksonville University and while there founded the first LGBTQ club on the school’s campus. Mallery then graduated from her alma mater Huntingdon College in 2014 with her Double Bachelor of Arts in Biology and History. Robinson taught Middle school Science and History in Jacksonville, Florida at Duval Charter School Baymeadows from 2014-2019. She has also presented several Transgender Empathy Trainings (TET Talks) presentations to Sony Playstation and Long Beach Vocal Rehab. I have also spoken publicly for The Long Beach Transgender Day of Remembrance and spoke for ALL Black Lives Matter Los Angeles, and co-hosted several LGBTQ virtual award shows, such as the Unique Women Coalition Our Honors Award. She also created a true crime podcast A Hateful Homicide covering the homicides of transgender, gender non-binary, and gender diverse community members. Mallery Jenna Robinson is currently a board member for The West Hollywood Transgender Advisory Board and The Los Angeles County HIV Commission.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I have definitely had my fair share of challenges such as: racism, colorism, antiblackness, microaggression in the workplace and in my personal spaces as well. I have been overlooked and undervalued, but still I rise and I will continue to be resilient and always advocate for our transgender, nonbinary, intersex, and two-spirit community members in the United States and abroad.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am proud of organizing Trans Pride Long Beach 2021 and co-hosting Long Beach Pride since 2022. I have presented my Transgender Empathy Trainings at multiple conferences as well as my true crime and investigative journalism podcast A Hateful Homicide, the only true crime podcast that focuses on the hate crimes and hateful homicides of our transgender, nonbinary, intersex and two-spirit communities, which is available on all audio platforms and streaming on YouTube.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Yes, when I went through my separation in 2018 while living in Florida, I decided to move across the country to Los Angeles, California and I have not looked back; it was scary as I didn’t know anyone here except my oldest brother, who was living in San Diego. I moved to Los Angeles a soon to be divorcee AfraCaribbean post-operative transgender woman living undetectable with HIV. I wasn’t sure what was in my future, but no regrets.
