Today we’d like to introduce you to Makayla Godden.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started selling t-shirts with my art on it as a side gig in college while studying fashion design at Academy of Art University San Francisco. I was struggling a bit with sewing and finding out what I was passionate about. I felt sort of lost. I came to a point where I realized one thing that really made me happy was seeing all different kinds of friends and family wearing my art on their clothes. So I ran with it. I completely changed my major to Textile Design and felt at home and never looked back. When graduating (during the pandemic) I decided to go all into the brand and start my own website. I’ve always had a thought of starting my own brand but through the struggles and the change of plans, I pushed through and now I’m living my dream. I still have a long ways to go but I wake up every day excited to create and excited to learn to improve the business and reach more and more people with the message!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’m thankful that my road was anything but smooth…. Through all the trials and tribulations, I feel like I grew as a woman and learned a lot through each one. I had some professors that didn’t believe in me… some said I drew like a five years old, that I would never get an A in their class, that I should just drop out and do my t-shirts. I believe adversity makes me who I am. It encourages me to try even harder, to tune out the negatives, and to keep going no matter what anyone says.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I create wearable art, 1 of 1 piece of clothing of all different sizes, designs, and colors. The brand embraces individuality, relaying the message that we as humans are 1 of 1. Were meant to be different for a reason and it’s important to embrace all that we are. I’m most proud of that message behind the clothes. Proud of the feeling I feel when I’m all dressed up in the clothes and I feel fun and able to express myself clothes!
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Authenticity. We live in a world of constant comparison. It’s easy to fall into what everyone else is doing. But it’s important to stick to who we really are & stay true to who we are.
