Today we’d like to introduce you to Leslie Carr.
Hi Leslie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my business (as a psychologist with a speaking and writing career) back in 2010, but I started my podcast, The Nature of Nurture, in 2020. It was a pandemic baby. I had been a performing musician in my twenties and I’m a life-long lover of audio in all formats, so I love listening to podcasts. Creating my own podcast felt like a natural extension of my creativity.
When I speak as a psychologist, my passion is for educating the general public about the human condition, the ways in which we’re shaped by trauma, culture, and every facet of life – so the show is about just that, how all of us are the product of our life circumstances.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Smooth road! Can you imagine? No, I’ve learned so much along the way. I’m a big believer in the idea that owning a business can be a great avenue for personal growth, because we learn so much about ourselves. We really have to confront our own internal limitations, and our unconscious beliefs.
I was raised in a family that wasn’t supportive of me using my voice, so to create a podcast and a speaking career has really required that I dig deep to find my sense of my own personal power. Not to mention that podcasting itself comes with a lot of hurdles and opportunities for learning and growth.
In the beginning the show was audio-only, which was perfect for me because I personally prefer to listen to podcasts, not necessarily to watch them. But I learned quickly that, in order to grow an audience, you need images and video for social media, so I expanded into the version of the show that now exists on YouTube.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a psychologist with a lot of expertise in the human condition – why and how we struggle, and how we overcome those obstacles. But I have a true passion for bringing that information to the public, which is uncommon for professional psychologists.
Many psychologists are either introverts, or private, intellectual types. It’s not every day that you see someone with this expertise, out in the world sharing meaningful information.
I deeply believe that knowledge is power. My hope is that giving people a peek behind the curtain at how a psychologist sees the world leaves them feeling informed, inspired, and empowered.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I’m always looking for exciting new guests for the show, and I also love being a guest on other people’s shows! If you have a podcast and want to have me on, I would love that.
The Nature of Nurture is also looking for sponsorship and advertisers, so if you think this program is the right fit for your brand, I would love to connect you with an audience of people who are curious, growth-oriented, and always looking to make life better for themselves.
