Check Out Keyonna Monroe’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keyonna Monroe.

Hi Keyonna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
So the thought process behind me starting my organization is realizing how important it is to create something that solves a much-needed problem in my community that can live on as a solution long after I’m gone.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some of my biggest struggles were learning how to get the support I needed and how to make the money needed to pay for what I wanted to do for students. I had no idea how to write grants or knew nothing about the ins and outs of a nonprofit. I also struggled with asking for the right amount of donations. After some failed attempts, ups and downs, I finally figured out a rhythm that worked for my business.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Being born and raised in South Central LA, sexually abused the majority of my childhood through incest and trafficking, and being surrounded by so many who have succumbed to a bad dealt hand and conditioning, I recognize that coming out of those weeds as a rose was a triumph among losses. I didn’t have any mentors to help shape my mindset and pour into the broken pieces of me. I believe that I made mistakes that I didn’t have to make if I knew better, and I can only imagine the damage that didn’t have to be caused by my own hands to my heart due to a lack of self-worth. Taking all of that into consideration, I recognized reflections of me as a child in so many other young girls and even the adults who suppressed their inner broken girls while volunteering at my son’s middle school and working (at that time) in television. When I took my volunteering a step further and more seriously, I noticed what my presence was and did for all the young girls who vulnerably opened up to me, and I also noticed the effect and what was felt in my absence.

I saw small parts of myself in so many of the students and decided that I would be to young girls what I needed when I was their age. It went from using my sick and vacation days to volunteer to quitting what I thought was a dream career towards a passion and purpose much bigger than myself. The impact and response was so effective that when the demand to do this same work with adults arose, I felt more than equipped and empowered to bring it full circle. I’m known for the Pretty2Me Foundation but also for the LYF Matters Project which focuses on adults and the domino effects of unhealed inner children in adult bodies. The LYF Matters Project is for those who are ready to make real changes in their relationships with themselves and others. This community & platform helps with conditioned programming of unworthiness by understanding the backstory of who you are. By teaching new behavioral habits through EQ, NLP & self-love, people learn to overcome damaging self-doubt. These are the gentle steps needed to gain clarity on what you really want in your life so that you can align yourself for the love & life you really want.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I learned that treatment can be durable and effective regardless of the method of delivery. It also confirmed that online therapy, by nature of technology, can make mental health care more accessible for people.

Many people faced mental health concerns and an increased need for self-care. As a result, the accessibility offered by online treatment options will continue to have a lasting impact.

Instead of driving to a therapist’s office, technology allowed for someone to join a session with the click of a button in mere seconds. A 50-minute session is just 50 minutes, rather than 50 minutes plus time spent commuting and rearranging your schedule. It also allowed opportunities for group sessions. I was able to come into the comfort of people’s home and offer counseling and coaching on a more personal and intimate level.
