Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Mattinson.
Hi Kelly, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My Papa worked in the Country Club biz for most of his long life and I grew up in that world. He always said, ” Kelly, you don’t want to work at a Country Club; you want to be a MEMBER. ” Well that didn’t happen, so I tried to make him proud and kept true to my goals. In college my Senior project was to produce a Golf Tournament, and I did.
My career was in retail, then I got married, stayed home with my 2 children, and life continued. I always volunteered and managed the galas, fundraisers and all things “event focused”. I even had a business called “Dressed to a Tea Parties” . We would dress the kids in costumes and host a tea party. It was really fun and wonderful when the kids were little. Once my children left the nest I started Your Day Event Planner and now I throw tea parties and galas for adults at country clubs and a plethora of venues! All of my past lives helped fine tune my skills. I am a “mom” in all aspects. I “MOM” everyone, so taking care of couples and families on their special day comes naturally to me. I love to see everyone enjoying their event rather than worrying about the details. If we plan ahead, if I learn about them, I can make decisions on their behalf and they trust me. This is vital to create their vision and help uphold our motto “YOUR day YOUR way” !
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have been very fortunate. First off I don’t need my business to pay all of my bills, so it can be small and I don’t need to get the $$$S. I take on families that I think mesh with me and I can be a benefit to them. Not everyone has this luxury, so for that I am blessed. In the early stages I would get flustered when things didn’t go smoothly, usually things out of my control , so that was frustrating. I don’t like when I can’t fix a problem, I always try to find the solution, I had a very difficult time with servers, venue employees moving at a snails pace! You have 2 hands, they should both be full or doing something at ALL times. Well I calmed down a bit, take lazy with a grain of salt, come earlier, allow extra time to set up and step back when it is not my job, but rather then venue’s staff to take care of. This comes with experience. With every wedding, Mitzvah, gala I learn something. That tool box helps me to be prepared for any twists and turns, and boy have I seen a lot of those! The challenge with my job is you only get 1 chance; no redos. So I try to ride though the bumps, put them into prospective and embrace the outcome shining light on the good and the bad.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Our personal attention is what sets us apart from other Planners. I get to know my families and ask a lot of questions so I “know” what they want. Sharing Pinterests, vision boards and photos help me understand their vision for the celebration.
I would not consider myself very crafty or creative, but I surround myself with an amazing team of assistants and vendors each with their own skills. We all bring something to the table and I just try to orchestrate it. We have produced some incredible events… when someone says they want to do a penguin themed Bar Mitzvah, what would you do? Snow globes, winter wonderland decor, blow up igloo photobooth and Nitro Ice Cream to start with! How about a Renaissance theme ? Get a Troupe of Jesters and a feast at each table, flags for place cards… yeap. Need a Cinderella carriage? Floral Tunnel? Late night snack? Dessert or Candy bar, we got ya! We love a good color scheme or theme, it helps us grow!
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love working with the same vendors, my team, because we work seamlessly together. With a look, we know, that comes with time. That being said, I love collaborating with NEW vendors. Photographers all have their own style, DJs throw their own unique party, florists amaze me with their creativity in bringing flowers to life!
I love adding new aspects, wedding painters, unique food options, cultural traditions and anything that sets their celebration apart from others. Nothing is cookie cutter, that would be boring!
I embrace all vendors and love sharing their skills with my clients and contacts.
Expanding our network only helps us all become better at our craft.
