Check Out Keith Casey’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keith Casey

Hi Keith, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve had a passion for cooking for as long as I can remember. My fondest memories involve spending time in the kitchen and barbecuing in the backyard with my grandparents. One pivotal moment was when my grandfather taught me to poach eggs; from then on, I was hooked. After school, I would eagerly watch cooking shows featuring chefs like Emeril Lagasse, Jamie Oliver, Wolfgang Puck, and Rachael Ray. I’d often call my mom at work, asking her to bring home unusual ingredients I saw on Iron Chef. Over time, I honed my skills in balancing flavors, learning how to combine sweetness, spiciness, and saltiness to create delicious dishes.

Cooking has always been a part of me, but recently I felt a shift. I wanted to set an example for my children, showing them they should never settle for less and that their dreams are achievable. With $300 in savings, I proposed starting a BBQ pop-up at my church. Our first Saturday was a success, as we sold out quickly and received great feedback. The same happened the following week. Despite limited foot traffic, our small venture has been fulfilling, allowing us to invite new friends to church and involve our family.

We’ve since named our endeavor Casey Family BBQ. We’ve catered events for up to 400 people and are now bidding on a 700-person event.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey has certainly been challenging, both in small and significant ways. Early on, we often left things behind or forgot to pick up essential items. Additionally, personal obstacles, particularly financial struggles, have frequently tested our resolve. Despite these difficulties, I have a strong sense that something positive is on the horizon. I truly believe that this is the path God has set for me—serving others, bringing joy through my cooking, and making people smile.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve held a variety of roles over the years, mostly in transportation and freight. While these jobs provided a decent income, they often left me feeling stressed and separated from my loved ones. Now, I work for my church, serving the Long Beach community. This role not only allows me to be more present for my kids but also supports the growth of Casey Family BBQ.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I’m naturally inclined to please others, and seeing people enjoy the food I cook brings me great joy. There’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of preparing a dish that you find delicious, only to have others—sometimes even strangers—validate it. Their positive feedback gives me the confidence to continue pursuing my passion.
