Today we’d like to introduce you to Keira Moran.
Keira, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve played piano since I was four years old, and sometimes when I was practicing my dad would yell from upstairs, “sounds good, what song is that?” As I got older, more often than not the answer was “oh nothing, I’m just making it up!” So he encouraged me to pursue composition which led to songwriting. I remember the first time I played any original songs in public was my 3rd grade piano concert where I debuted my hits “Halloween” and “Chicken Burrito” (“Halloween” was a dope song actually, I might bring that one back). It wasn’t until high school that I really got serious about songwriting: I started working with a coach, reading all the songwriting books, and going to conferences. That was a very exciting time because things were happening so fast. I ended up winning an international songwriting contest and got to go to the Kauai Music Festival to perform! I was recognized by “Miss Northern Virginia,” I got hired to play at my favorite New Year’s Eve festival, I wrote the score for a short film, released an album with big name producers, toured the East coast one summer, and was voted “most likely to be famous” my senior year (ok I know that’s not really an accomplishment but I was very excited at the time). Amongst all this hype I decided to apply for some music schools and was so happy to be accepted to the songwriting program at the Frost School of Music in Miami! My personal transition from “medium fish in a medium pond” in Alexandria, Virginia to “small fish in a big pond” in Miami was definitely necessary. During college, I interned with Graham Edwards (ASCAP Songwriter of the year, Grammy-nominated songwriter of “The Matrix”) over the summers and that really solidified my decision to move to LA after graduation. I tried applying for various music business jobs here but when that wasn’t working out I got impatient and drove to LA from the East coast in August 2017 with no job and nowhere to live and never looked back! I took a break from releasing music for about a year while I was desperately trying to find sources of income and acquire the cheapest apartment possible. But in March of this year I released my single “All the Right Things” and on August 17th my next single “Give it a Try” comes out! 2019 has been a year of rebirth for me and I’m really excited about what’s to come.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
When I first started songwriting, I was popping out mostly piano ballads because that was my comfort zone. Playing piano was such a huge part of my childhood that it took a while to separate the two. I really looked up to (and still do) artists like Alicia Keys, Elton John, Billy Joel, and Freddie Mercury that are/were killer performers AND players. When I started playing more gigs, my style evolved into pop/rock because it is a lot more fun for me to play high energy songs live. Now, the songs I’m releasing are all Dance Pop/Electropop. This transition was important to me because I want to make music that is as close as possible to what I actually listen to on a daily basis. My new single “Give it a Try” is a super fun summery track that I would listen to while getting ready to go out with friends, or while driving down the 405 with the windows open. I’m a very positive, upbeat person and I want that to be reflected in the songs I release. I do love writing for other artists and producers, though because it gives me a chance to stray from my current personal brand and create something totally different.
How can artists connect with other artists?
Networking can be exhausting but it really is so important and you can end up meeting great friends that way! If you are an artist looking for like-minded creatives, I would check out smaller songwriting conferences that have a real community feel like the Durango Expo. I met some of my favorite collaborators (and best friends) there. Songwriting circles and open mics can also be a great way to meet people in a low-pressure environment. In general, if you go out and support smaller artists and attend their live shows, they will be thankful for your encouragement and do the same for you.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
