Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Ordonez.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started in music when i was 14 playing bass, after a couple of years and looking at options I eventually attended musicians institute where I studied music production, music business, songwriting and eventually post production. in 2016 I started scoring short films. in 2019 Moved to Guatemala and during covid further developed skills in music composition for films and TV, Sound Design and Audio post production and now I work full time as a re-recording mixer and sound designer helping film makers get their movies festival ready with hollywood quality sound
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
ha! i wish. the transition from being a musician in a band to being an engineer in the studio and eventually the person in charge of the entire audio post production of movies was not deliberate.
it was failure after failure that made me stumble into things, as everyone knows, doing the band thing… basically impossible. I know, I tried it. it was moving but eventually making movies in the middle of all that was somehow more interesting to me.
moving to Guatemala is a longer story that I’m not gonna get into but I’ll say this. it was not by choice and being away from the LA scene made it incredibly difficult to navigate. covid as we know was…. a thing… and to this day the damage done to the film industry is noticeable. it took many years and many day jobs to get back to doing audio full time and it’s still hard to this day
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an Audio Post Production professional.
that means that when a movie gets filmed, edited and colored. it then goes to the sound team, I specialize in something called re-recording mixing which is the final step in the audio post production timeline.
as a musician I’m known for my aggressive pop punk/metal influenced style and as a mix engineer that influence has overlapped into my work in film, giving my projects a signature style that makes them stand out in festivals and contests
What does success mean to you?
I’ve always defined success as being able to live at my own pace, having control of when and where I work and having enough to be able to enjoy my time off
