Check Out Dexter Jordan Brown’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dexter Jordan Brown.

Hi Dexter Jordan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Thanks for having me guys! Yeah, so where do I start – I was born and raised in one of the most challenging neighborhoods in Birmingham, Alabama, however, I refused to let my circumstances define me or dampen my desire to make a mark in this world. This determination, in many regard, was instilled in me by my strong mother, who single-handedly raised three boys and taught us that ‘anything was possible if we set our minds to it’. This was a mantra that became integral to my identity I believe and continues to guide me to this day.

It was during my high school years that I discovered my passion for live music, often sneaking into concerts and immersing myself in the electrifying atmosphere of entertainment. It was during this time that a few friends and I decided to form a band with founder, Jasen Cleveland called “Dirty Souf.” Through this time, we had the incredible opportunities to open for over 30 major artists, forging meaningful relationships not only with trending artist but also with some of our idols. These experiences ignited a fire within me that solidified my love for the art of music and entertainment. I often would find myself studying the profiles and masterclasses from great music executives in music such as Berry Gordy, Quincy Jones, and Russel Simmons. I knew I wanted to take my career in music and entertainment a step further but didn’t know how to get there just yet, and just performing for artist wasn’t going to cut it.

Driven by my passion, I made the decision to pursue higher education, recognizing the need to gain a broader perspective on the industry I was so deeply drawn to. Starting college at 20 wasn’t easy by any means, but I knew that this was something that had to be done for my situation. Majoring in Communications and Marketing, I was able to work-my-butt off and delve into my respective fields, earning scholarships and internships along the way. It was in 2022 that my career trajectory took an incredible turn when I was awarded a highly coveted Marketing Internship with Universal Music Group / Def Jam Recordings’ in Santa Monica, California. During my time in Santa Monica, I’ve been highly privileged and fortunate to become a member of The Recording Academy through the Grammy-U program, providing me with unparalleled access to industry luminaries and becoming a mentee. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to work directly with the CEOs, executives, and mavericks of the biggest labels and agencies in the entertainment world and I don’t take it for granted knowing where it all started from.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Yeah, so I’ve encountered various challenges that have tested my resilience and determination over the years for sure. One of the most significant challenges I faced was growing Alabama. The environment is marked by limited opportunities and sticking to the status quo. I knew I wanted so much more for my community and family, and I refused to let these circumstances define me and instead used it as fuel to strive for a better. In my pursuit of a career in the music and entertainment industry, I encountered numerous hurdles and setbacks. I knew the path to success in competitive fields is often fraught with obstacles. However, I remained steadfast in my passion, overcoming rejections and setbacks and continuously honing my skills and knowledge.

Financial limitations were also a significant challenge along the way. Pursuing higher education and making progress in the music industry required financial resources that were not always readily available. However, I sought scholarships, internships, and other opportunities to support my goals and ensure that financial constraints did not hinder my progress. Despite these challenges, I have always maintained a positive mindset and relied on the lessons instilled in me by my strong mother. Her belief that anything is possible with determination and a focused mindset has been a guiding force in my life. I have learned to see challenges as opportunities for growth, and each obstacle has only strengthened my resolve to succeed.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.

These moments of risk-taking have not only shaped my journey but have also instilled in me the courage to continue pushing boundaries and embracing new challenges. So always give it a shot, always.
