Check Out Chris Singer’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Singer.

Hi Chris, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Vienna, Austria. My entry point into photography came shortly after finishing university in Vienna, where I studied sports science. Following completion of my degree, I began traveling the world, pursuing my passion for windsurfing and photographing the pro-windsurfers I encountered at this time. After returning to Austria, magazines and publications became interested in my work and I gained increasing recognition in the field of sports photography as a self-taught photographer.

I started my professional career in 2003 working for an international sports photo agency whilst simultaneously receiving high demand from a diverse range of clients across the fields of publishing and advertisement. Working for brands including Puma, Red Bull, Cola Cola, Nike and Atomic allowed me to broaden my portfolio and extend my aesthetic into portrait, beauty and still-life photography.

I then developed more and more in these directions, worked hard throughout, did also many jobs for credit and increasingly networked in the industry. Of course, I also expanded all my equipment and love working with my three Hasselblad cameras, both analog and digital. I am very grateful and proud to already be working for international clients in the fashion and beauty industry such as Elie Saab, Tory Burch, Antik Batik, Dr. Barbara Sturm, Mila Moursi to name a few and my work has been printed in print or online in Vogue US, Vogue Arabia, Vogue France, Grazia Italia, Vanity Fair Italia, Alem, Forbes US, The Hollywood Reporter and others.

I love to work with artists who have personality, character, attitude and have something to say – mainly from the entertainment industry. I portrayed numerous artists, models and athletes including Jaime King, Dita von Teese, Yael Grobglas, Tati Gabrielle, Jay Shetty, Elisa Sednaoui, Bianca Balti, Joyce DiDonato or Tiger Woods among many others.

In addition to my commissioned work, I continue to realize artistic photo projects and live out my passion for analogue photography. Currently, I am working on an art project together with artists from the US dance industry and on another photo-project called “lips”.

After more than ten years spent working in Europe and the multitude of business trips to the USA, I decided to obtain a work visa and move my center of life to Los Angeles. My wife and I then moved to LA in early 2020 – 6 weeks before the COVID19 pandemic also forced California into lockdown.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The real challenges are the ones with yourself. As a creative, as an artistic person, I think you have the most doubts about yourself. At least I feel that way. I’m always totally excited and happy about a new great project or a new client, but as soon as the work is finished, I’m already thinking about what I could have done better or whether I’m living up to my own expectations.

But of course, even as a newbie here in LA who moved to the city shortly before the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, the start for me has not been that easy. But I’m here, I’ve arrived and I’m more motivated than ever. The last year also had positive sides for me, as I still got to meet many good people who are now my clients or friends. I moved here because I want to live my dream here. This is to grow professionally and privately, to be successful with my photography and artwork and to live the Californian lifestyle, with which I feel very very comfortable.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I firmly believe in photos that touch us all deeply and have an effect on us. And that is my conviction and my ambition, with every photo I take. In my photographs, the viewer finds movement, emotion and presentation of a human being or a product in a moving whole. For me, the best thing about working is when the protagonists trust me in front of my camera and they let me get close with my lens. And that’s what my pictures should show. With my years of motion sequence experience, technical know-how and my eye for capturing the right moment, and my special dedication to lighting, I strive to create unique, emotional, touching images.
