Check Out Chanel Charles’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chanel Charles.

Chanel Charles

Hi Chanel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I was lucky enough to be raised by a tribe of hardworking people who raised me to know that quitting was never an option. Whether it be school, sports, or extracurriculars, it was ingrained in me that if I set my mind to something, I had to see it through. Little did I know this would set the tone for how I’d carry myself both personally and professionally, for the rest of my life.

My journey into this industry began as a first-generation college student, pursuing my Bachelors of Arts in Strategic Communication with a minor in Communication Studies. Every year, I would spend my summers in Los Angeles, interning at fashion PR firms and building my resume. I grew a love for the world of marketing and PR almost instantly, and my passion for skincare and makeup led me to beauty. I spent years working in Korean beauty and loved what I was doing, but I always felt like something was missing… I was working in rooms I never imagined being in before, but I wasn’t working with anyone that looked or sounded like me.

Then, I found Black Girl Sunscreen, which immediately felt like home. I’m now the Creative Manager of one of the hottest beauty brands, not just in my circle of friends/family but on the entire beauty scene! Working with a team that continuously applies pressure, sets trends, and breaks records in this industry has been so incredibly rewarding.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course. Navigating as a woman in your 20s is hard. Regardless of what things may seem like on the outside, there always seems to be an obstacle presenting itself behind the scenes. From feeling the pressure of needing to have it all figured out, to people doubting you, to the occasional self-doubt, to juggling a work-life balance. It’s hard. But, for me, it’s about how you deal with problems when they come your way. I try to embrace the struggles and remain optimistic when there’s a lot on my plate.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
In March, it will make three years of me working on the marketing team. I specialize in all things creative and digital, from campaigns, to activations, to merchandise, to content creation, and so much more. I’m most proud of how well my team works together to shift the narrative around sunscreen. We’ve brought life to a topic that was once boring and unspoken about within our community, so it’s cool to be a part of changing this conversation forever.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Our supporters definitely deserve all the credit!
