Today we’d like to introduce you to Brady Allio
Hi Brady, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in the close-knit community of Juneau, Alaska, my artistic inclinations found an unexpected outlet in the makeup industry. While drawing and painting had always provided a space for self-expression, it was the visual spectacle of the TV show FaceOff that ignited a true passion within me. Witnessing the transformative power of special effects makeup, the ability to conjure fantastical characters and tell stories through the human face, I felt an undeniable pull. This newfound fascination propelled me to explore makeup artistry as a medium for creativity, patiently honing my skills and immersing myself in the artistry.
As high school progressed, a clear vision emerged: a career as a freelance makeup artist. I delved deeper into the techniques, aesthetics, and industry knowledge, solidifying my conviction that makeup was not just a hobby but a meaningful form of self-expression and a path to a fulfilling career. My journey into the world of makeup artistry began when I stumbled upon Make-Up Designory (MUD) in Los Angeles, California. I knew right away that this was where I wanted to learn and grow as an artist, so I took a leap of faith and enrolled. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Pursuing a career in makeup artistry was not a decision I made lightly. It required a great deal of hard work, dedication, and a willingness to overcome any obstacles that came my way. As a Deaf individual, I faced unique challenges in my pursuit of this career, but I was determined to succeed. I refused to let my disability hold me back, and I worked tirelessly to hone my craft and build a strong portfolio.
My journey into the world of film makeup began with an incredible opportunity to assist my best friend, Gabrielle LaFleur, on a music video set. It was an eye-opening experience that unveiled the intricate workings of a set and the meticulous effort required to ensure makeup and hair translate flawlessly on camera. This experience ignited a passion that quickly led to another milestone: assisting Marianne Beer, the Head of the Makeup Department, on my first film gig for LifeTime. I was brimming with excitement throughout the entire production, soaking up every detail and learning from an experienced professional. Now, a year and 27 films later, I’m immensely grateful for the experiences I’ve gained and thrilled to see even more projects on the horizon. This is just the beginning, and I’m eager to continue honing my craft and contributing to the magic of filmmaking.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I was born Deaf, and American Sign Language (ASL) was my first language. It wasn’t until I started kindergarten that I began learning my second language, English. Growing up, I faced the challenge of learning two languages simultaneously, and there were times when I experienced a language barrier. However, I never let it hinder me from fully understanding what was happening around me. I took immediate action to overcome the language barrier by typing it out on my iPhone’s note app or writing it down on paper. Even now, I still encounter language barriers from time to time, depending on the people’s ability to understand my voice.
After moving back to Los Angeles post the COVID-19 pandemic, I realized that there were more challenges than I had anticipated. Rejections were tough to deal with, and I faced communication and understanding concerns from many. They thought I was not qualified enough to work on film sets due to my hearing impairment. However, I did not let it affect me and continued to strive hard to get my foot into the Hollywood Industry with the support of a couple of my best friends. They have been instrumental in helping me navigate through the Los Angeles lifestyle and culture.
Navigating the makeup artistry industry in Los Angeles presented a significant challenge, particularly due to its fierce competition. My deafness added another layer of complexity, requiring me to consistently prove my skills and demonstrate that it wouldn’t hinder my ability to perform the job. I’ve worked hard to establish myself as a dedicated and creative makeup artist, earning the respect of those I’ve encountered on set. Meticulous preparation is key; I analyze scripts and consult with directors and producers to anticipate the required looks. However, an early experience of arriving underprepared served as a crucial learning moment. Determined to avoid repeating that mistake, I invested in new kit cases and meticulously organized my makeup products, ensuring I’m always equipped to handle any request, even last-minute ones. Being over-prepared allows me to deliver exceptional service and meet the diverse needs of my clients and directors.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a freelance makeup artist with a passion for versatility, I thrive on the dynamic energy of diverse sets, from the runway to the stage and screen. My artistry knows no bounds, and I’m constantly pushing my creative limits to master both stunning beauty looks and captivating special effects. It’s incredibly fulfilling to demonstrate my wide range of skills, whether it’s crafting flawless beauty makeup or diving into the transformative world of prosthetics and special effects. While I enjoy all facets of makeup, my heart truly belongs to special effects, particularly the creation of otherworldly creatures and gory characters that challenge the boundaries of human appearance. My unique perspective, shaped by my experience as a Deaf individual fluent in both American Sign Language and English, sets me apart. I approach my work with a distinct vision and communication style, enriching my collaborations and adding a unique flavor to every project. My resilience as a Deaf artist has been instrumental in my success. Overcoming communication barriers and societal biases has instilled in me an unwavering confidence in my abilities. This determination has not only helped me navigate the challenges of the industry but has also allowed me to cultivate lasting relationships with clients who appreciate my talent and unique perspective. I believe that by embracing my identity and remaining true to myself, I can inspire others and make a significant contribution to the world of makeup artistry.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
For any aspiring artist embarking on their creative journey, remember to hold your head high and nurture an unwavering belief in yourself. Confidence is your compass, guiding you toward the realization of your dreams and goals, no matter how audacious they may seem. Never succumb to the temptation of giving up; instead, delve deep within to unearth the passions and motivations that will fuel your perseverance. Shield yourself from negativity and dismiss any voices that attempt to dictate your limitations. Embrace every opportunity that comes your way, saying “yes” to every gig that presents itself. These experiences are invaluable, not only for honing your skills but also for gaining recognition from directors and building a strong network with fellow creatives on set.
