Today we’d like to introduce you to Benny Borsakian.
Hi Benny, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Originally from Romania, I came to the United States at the age of 12, seeking refuge from the hardships of life under a communist regime. My family settled in Los Angeles, California, where I later built a career in the cosmetics industry, spending over 20 years honing my expertise. I initially worked alongside my parents in their company before branching out to start my own business. I launched and successfully distributed a nail polish line, which I eventually sold.
My roots and experiences in Romania left a lasting impact on me—especially the memories of widespread hunger and hardship. These experiences inspired a deeper purpose: to help ensure that no one around me would go hungry. This passion led me to transition into the food industry.
I began by acquiring a Johnny Rockets franchise, gaining valuable experience in restaurant operations. Motivated to create something of my own, I launched Benny’s Tacos in 2010. What started as a single location has since grown into a thriving brand with four restaurants across the city.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Every new business comes with its challenges, but for me, those challenges have only fueled my determination to work harder. I wouldn’t say there were too many bumps in the road, but there were definitely learning moments. For example, when I acquired the Johnny Rockets franchise, they required an intensive three-month training program for all new franchise owners. It was demanding, but in hindsight, incredibly valuable—it gave me a solid foundation and helped me understand the operational side of the restaurant business in depth.
The biggest ongoing challenge I face is finding dedicated employees who truly align with my vision and are willing to put their heart into the work. Building a team that shares your passion and work ethic isn’t easy, but it’s absolutely essential for long-term success. I’m constantly striving to create a workplace culture where people feel motivated and proud to be part of something meaningful.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My company is a fast-casual restaurant specializing in Mexican cuisine—burritos, tacos, quesadillas, and more. What really sets us apart is our commitment to freshness and quality. All of our food is made to order using simple, fresh ingredients—never frozen. We source fresh produce daily and cook everything on-site, which makes a huge difference in flavor and quality.
One unique twist we’ve added is rotisserie chicken, which our customers absolutely love. It’s juicy, flavorful, and pairs perfectly with our sides. I also created a signature creamy garlic sauce inspired by the flavors I grew up with in Romania—it’s become a customer favorite and adds a personal touch to our menu.
One of my personal favorites is the Al Pastor. We grill fresh-cut pineapple to bring out its natural sweetness, then chop it and blend it into our marinated pork. It’s a bold, delicious flavor that stands out.
Beyond the food, we focus heavily on three things: freshness, exceptional customer service, and spotlessly clean stores. These values are the backbone of our business.
Catering is also a major part of what we do. We specialize in events ranging from intimate gatherings of 15 to large-scale events for up to 1,500 people—offices, schools, parties, you name it. We’re proud to offer the same high quality and freshness in every order, no matter the size.
The customer is the most important person along with our employees
What does success mean to you?
For me, success means accomplishing the goals you set for yourself, no matter the industry. In my business, that means consistently delivering great food, providing excellent service, and taking care of my team. When both customers and employees are happy—when people feel valued, appreciated, and enjoy the experience we provide—that’s true success in my eyes. It’s about building something that brings people together and makes a positive impact every day.
