Check Out Anton Gudim’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anton Gudim.

Anton, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I became an online artist about 13 years ago, and six years ago I came up with the “yes, but” webcomic format. During this time, I’ve published about eight books worldwide: in Europe, America, and China, and I’ve held several solo exhibitions. Two and a half years ago, I left the office, and drawing became my full-time profession.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’m the type of person who weighs the pros and cons carefully and doesn’t easily embrace change. That’s why the realization that I could live solely on creative work terrified me for a long time. I worked in an office for about 10 years as a senior technical engineer. It wasn’t easy for me to interrupt my career, as that job seemed “secure and serious,” while “drawing” was a labor of love, but extremely unreliable financially.

For a long time, my main problem as an artist was burnout and the possibility that one day I’d simply run out of ideas and have nothing left to draw. I worked through this in my head for a long time, working with a psychoanalyst. Now my main fear is social media algorithms, which can behave unpredictably.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As I’ve already mentioned, I’m a web artist with over 4 million followers on social media. I’m the creator of the comic strip “Yes, But,” which explores the everyday contradictions of the modern world. I’m not proud of many of my drawings, but I’m proud that some of them remain relevant years later. I enjoy raising “eternal” issues that were relevant to Millennials and are now becoming relevant to Generation Z and Alpha.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define an artist’s success as their demand. I don’t measure success by money or followers. But it’s crucial for me to know that my work is appreciated, that there’s interest in it, and that I’m involved in interesting collaborative projects: any positive feedback, any requests for opportunities to collaborate with me, any talented artists who respect my drawings—this is what gives me the strength to move forward.
