Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Massi.
Hi Amanda, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m blessed to have known my career path from a young age. At 16, I opened a women’s boutique, Miele boutique, in my hometown of Las Vegas. This was a crash course in buying, sales, marketing, accounting and styling clients. Fast forward to graduate school, I earned a Master in Fine Arts with an emphasis on Fashion Design at The Academy of Art University in San Francisco. While in grad school, I was styling mainly men who worked in technology or finance. It was required to have an internship and I was fortunate enough to land an internship with Zanna Roberts Rassi at Marie Claire Magazine in New York. Zanna opened my eyes to the celebrity and editorial side of styling. Once I returned to San Francisco I immediately started to organize test shoots to create my editorial styling portfolio. I posted those test shoots on Instagram and in 2019 I gained enough work in Los Angeles to make the move. I go above and beyond for my clients and take each project very seriously. I constantly network to gain new clients and usually get booked for new projects while on set. Instagram continues to be my ‘store front’ to gain new clients as well.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Besides the internship at Marie Claire Magazine, I am completely self-taught. I’ve made countless mistakes along the way. I refuse to accept defeat and continue to be a problem solver and have a positive outlook with the end goal in mind. (easier said than done on some days) In my opinion, you only fail if you quit. My greatest struggle was developing a styling platform while living in San Francisco. Being in that start-up culture I thought, “Why not shop from the store that knows you best? Your own closet!” First Mpressions was created and consumed my life for four years. I almost had the platform running perfectly and then my website got hacked. Overnight First Mpressions was gone. The failure of First Mpressions further motivated me to pursue a styling career in the entertainment industry.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a wardrobe stylist for mainly music artists and editorials. I have a maximalist aesthetic through the combination of color, print and texture. This perspective is what makes my point of view as a creative so unique. I’m most proud of getting to know my clients on a deep level to figure out how to tangibly bring out their message to the world.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Los Angeles will forever be my home because of the immense amount of work here. The sun is always shining and the list of things to do are endless. I think we all can agree that what we like the least about LA is the traffic.
