Today we’d like to introduce you to Nia McCoy.
Hi Nia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started Lashes On Fleek in Mid January – February of 2018. I started lashing at my mom’s house in Pasadena, CA in the living room on a massage table I bought for $60.00 from one of my high school friend’s moms. I am completely self-taught in classic lashes which is what launched my career. At the time, I was working at an old folks home waiting tables Monday – Sunday. Once I realized the financial freedom of working for myself and being able to offer beauty services. I was intrigued by lashes because I had mine done at another local salon in Los Angeles and they were terrible! I wanted to make sure that experience didn’t happen to any other person which is why I started lashing myself. I also attended Glendale community college at the time in which I was a business major. I dropped out of college once I realized that being an entrepreneur was my calling. I worked at various nail salons and rented rooms from other bigger lash brands until I felt like my business had grown enough to invite other ladies to come work with me. I had my daughter when I was 17 years old and always hustled working at places like McDonald’s and the gap ensuring I was able to draw and income to take care of my daughter and myself.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a pretty consistent road. Of course when working with women and renting spaces at other establishments, you’ll have your fair share of disagreements but for the most part, it’s been pretty easy. Some days are better than others especially when it comes to the clients. You get good clients and you get bad clients. Clients that leave 1 star reviews because there wasn’t enough candy in the jar at the entrance and clients who will rate you 10/10 and become family. The hardest obstacle is finding women to come in and work with you who genuinely have the best interest of the business in mind and who aren’t for self. So many people come and go because they give up on the business due to personal reasons but those who stick it out reap the benefits that being an entrepreneur has to offer. Having to work full time and get and esthetician license also had its challenges from me taking clients at the school to almost quitting because I felt I was cutting into my income too much but in the end, I was able to make it through.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in a semi-permanent makeup form called eyelash extensions. This is where you apply one fake lash to one individual hair. This art form takes years to master and you need to have a steady hand and patience. I am best known for professionalism my nonchalant attitude to haters and also having clean work that any artist can work over. What sets me apart from other lash salons is that we’re not you’re everyday come get lashed and leave. We love to engage our customers we love to create healthy relationships with our clients and we also will go the extra mile for our customers if this means coming in at 7am or staying late till 10pm.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Since I never give up, I always win. I never let anyone else’s opinion influence my direction in life. I don’t make decisions off of emotions. I’m willing to admit when I’m wrong and learn from that situation. Most people have giant egos that need to be stroked but I feel like there’s always room for improvement. Especially when it came to opening up my lash supply store. I took so many losses finically when trying to find the best vendors for products. There were many times I felt like it wasn’t for me but I was able to regroup and look at the bigger picture.
