Check Out Cameron Khan’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Khan.

Hi Cameron, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I make indie dream pop music under the project name “Hawian Eagles”. I started writing and producing music when I was around 14 or so, it wasn’t good by any means but it’s a start you know. I actually never was really interested in music in the sense of creating it, I was more into films as child, and I still am. However, my brother is into music a lot and was in couple of bands when I was younger, so I was kind of always surrounded by music and or creativity if you will, so one day I was just bored and decided to learn how to play guitar and now here we are, in this loving and painful relationship with music. From that point on, I’ve been making music nonstop, and that is probably one of the reasons why I didn’t peruse a film path instead, I am much more better with producing music, and I love the independence that comes with music making. Throughout these years, I’ve played in a couple of bands and even played a couple of live shows for my own music. I was planning to do more this year, but sadly covid happened, and kind of stopped that notion from happening, but I am looking forward to getting back out there and to show people the new music I am working on and the genres I’ve been experimenting with.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh man, where do I even start. Music and honestly anything that takes creativity comes with the notion that there is a high chance that you will not succeed, and for a person who is a nihilist with pretty bad anxiety, it can be extremely difficult at times. I actually find it funny that often many artists are introverts, and in a field that kind of demands social moments and a confident presence that’s difficult in itself, but now add the opportunity of intense rejection and possibly years of no one even knowing about your music, it can take a lot out of anyone. However, if you really do have the passion for it, you will power through all of that. I know that sounds super cliche but it really is true. You kind of get in the mindset that I am just going to make stuff that I like and that helps me as well. And sort of just become numb to the pain… god that sounds so depressing.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I write and produce music for the most part. Lately, I have been venturing out into producing for other artists and that is super fun. I always liked working by myself and knowing that what I make (bad or good) is on me. However, working with other people really shows you how lonely that mentality is. I’ve met so many talented individuals that humble you and it is something so beautiful honestly. I’m definitely most known for my project “Hawian Eagles”. I wouldn’t say I’m big by any means, with music you will always find someone that is bigger and better than you, so I often try overcompensate the fact that this industry is so brutal with self-deprecation, which is not healthy and good for anyone, but I do have people that message me very nice messages about my music, that gives me enough motivation and hope to last for a couple more months haha.

Recently I’ve been really proud of my audio production skills. Like if you listen to my early music from high school, it is so bad, like honestly laughably bad, it is honestly so cringe that I posted those in a moment of my life and I was so proud of them! I legit was like “Yuh this slaps!”, oh god Cameron if only you knew… but you can see the massive improvement from those songs to my current ones, not only with like melodies and songwriting but with also the mixing and stuff. Since I record and mix everything by myself, I am proud of the distance I’ve come. Who knows though, I am sure I am going to look back at the music I am releasing now and cringe at how it is mixed or how it sounds. At least then, I know I am growing you know? Honestly, I really don’t know what sets me apart from other musicians. Like let’s be completely honest it is hard to be completely original in today’s musical climate. Everyone is inspired by each other, and I honestly think what sets the artist apart from each other is their personality and how honest you feel their music is to be.

At first, I would think I was unique because I made all my music at home in this little corner, like a vampire or something, but literally everyone does that now, which is a great thing, it’s easier now than ever to make music, but it also means almost everything has been done and every story has been told. I just think people like my music literally just because it sounds good and is catchy. I don’t think I am like this revolutionary person who will change the music game forever.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
So I lived in Orange County for most of my teen years and one thing I love is how intimate it feels. Like I’ve met all of my closest friends here and I’ll probably never forget this place with all of the memories and such. Some things I dislike about this place is probably like any other city, it can get dangerous at moments like I was almost carjacked here once. That’s what I get for going on a midnight McDonald’s run.
