An Inspired Chat with SEKTOR 8 of Los Angeles

SEKTOR 8 shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning SEKTOR 8, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
When I DJ, I completely lose track of time. That’s the main reason I started doing what I do, it brings me pure joy to see other people dancing to something I created. A lot of that drive originally came from early childhood insecurities, but over time it’s grown into my purpose: seeing people happy and connected on the dancefloor because of the music I share.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Brandon, and my project is called SEKTOR 8. This all started about 10 years ago when I was living in Thailand and went to my first nightclub. I saw a DJ spinning for an almost empty crowd, it was a hip-hop event, but his energy and passion completely lit something in me. That same night I went home, downloaded Virtual DJ, and the rest is history. The message behind SEKTOR 8 is about living fully in the present and shaping your own reality. My slogan, Reality Reprogrammed, reflects the futuristic, community driven vision of my brand, creating our own reality together in the moment. I’ve been blessed to play some incredible shows recently, including direct support for HOL! at Nova and for Crankdat at Time, and I’ve got a busy release schedule lined up for the rest of the year, which I’m really excited to share.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
Honestly, when I first started I didn’t know anybody, and there weren’t really proper tutorials online like there are today. So in the beginning it was all trial and error, just figuring things out on my own. As time went on, YouTube University definitely became a huge part of my learning, and connecting with other people in the scene taught me a lot as well. It’s been a mix of self teaching and learning from the community around me

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
Without going into full detail, one of the biggest lessons in my life has been to be very mindful of the people you allow close to you. The energy of the people around you becomes the energy you carry and reflect back into the world. That’s true for family, friends, relationships, anyone you keep close. Learning to choose wisely and surround myself with the right energy has been both a defining wound and one of the biggest parts of my healing.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
For the most part, yes. The reason I say ‘for the most part’ is because when people see me in real life, it’s usually at a show where I’m overstimulated, tired, nervous, full of emotions, and I can go into a kind of tunnel vision where I’m focused on one thing. In those moments I might not come across as fully genuine simply because there’s so much happening internally. But overall, especially to my long term fans and close friends, I’m the same person online and in person. I don’t believe in being fake, it always catches up with you.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If immortality were real, what would you build?
I’d probably start by building something ridiculous, like a massive castle made entirely out of chicken nuggets, just because why not? But on a real note, I’d want to build a legacy that outlives me, a community and movement through music that inspires people for generations.
