Today we’d like to introduce you to Alysha Marcantonio.
Alysha’s story was made Hollywood in more ways than one. She grew up in small town Massachusetts with big dreams surrounded by lots of skeptics. At just 14 she convinced her parents to enroll her in makeup school and within her first few sessions she knew this is what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. So, as a college senior, when most of her peers were busy choosing colleges she was working hard to convince her parents to let her skip college and move 3,000 miles away to LA to pursue a career in makeup.
“It took a lot of convincing,” she recalls, “and many people thought I was come running back home once I got this whole artist thing out of my system.” The idea of leaving her small town, going to Hollywood and doing makeup for film and music videos seemed like a stretch to most in her hometown, but she did not let the shallow expectations of others determine her destiny. Instead, she got her blessings, came out to LA and found a way to make her dream a reality. It wasn’t an easy road – financially and otherwise it started off as anything but smooth – but her determination and chutzpah led to success. In makeup school in LA they advised her that she would probably have to spend a few years working at little to no pay, but she was unwilling to accept that and ended up getting paid very soon after graduating. In 2010, she met a music video director who gave her a shot at doing makeup for a video he was directing. She did so well that over the years they have gone on to do over 80 music videos together.
Leaving a small town, coming to LA, working in makeup and entertainment and succeeding is what the LA dream is all about. Her story isn’t picture perfect, but it’s one of the most inspiring and grounded stories we’ve come across.
