Conversations with Tynisha Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tynisha Johnson

Hi Tynisha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hi, my name is Tynisha Johnson. I’m a Certified Personal Trainer and Certified Nutritional Coach through National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). Serving women in their mid 30’s and up feel great in their bodies again. I’ve always been into fitness, primarily in the field of dance, as well as track and field. I attended schools of performing arts with a focus on dance, but in Elementary and High School, I also ran track. I loved track and field, but I also had a great passion for dance, so I did both. Sports comes in different ways, dance and track was my outlet. Once I graduated High School, I found that over the years, I’ve always been in a position of being a coach, a trainer or a mentor to people related to the physical aspect, mostly through the art of dance, and that was very rewarding for me. Over time, I transitioned and became more focused on my own fitness, so I started going to the gym more often and encouraging others to do the same. I’ve been told often that I should become a personal trainer because I was very good at not only maintaining my physical fitness, but I was also good at training and motivating others. It took me a while, but I finally went for it!

TyFit Personal Training was established in 2017, before I changed the name. The initial concept of TyFit was to engage a group of individuals to have a group/circuit training experience in some capacity in different locations, so my initial title was “TyFit Mobility Circuit Training” because I had a vision to be mobile as I introduced a variety of fitness experiences to individuals on their fitness journey through circuit training, hiking, running, ext. As I worked with these groups for several months, I wasn’t feeling satisfied with the level of expertise I was providing and felt ill-equipped to continue on this specific path, so I took a step back for a year to re-brand myself and my business model. In April of 2018, I hired a Personal Trainer to get myself in better shape both physically and mentally and during that time, I decided to train for my first fitness (bikini) competition. Although this was a tough journey, I learned so much about myself and fitness. I competed in my first show in April 2019 and took 1st and 2nd place in my categories which pushed me to finally register for and become a Certified Personal Trainer. In October 2019 I was officially certified and now I felt more equipped to give proper guidance to individuals that come to me for assistance in their fitness journey. In that moment, Ty2Fit Personal Training was Born! After my first competition I continued on to compete and became Nationally Qualified and have competed on a National stage a few times and placed in the top 3, taking home a 1st place win at my last show in 2022.

Ty2Fit Personal Training is currently serving clients, both in-person and online, with a goal to expand. This journey has been amazing, helping individuals reshape not only their bodies but their mindset. I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have encountered a few challenges along the way. In becoming a new business owner, I had a lot to learn. But Im sure my journey could have been worse and I can say that I havent had a really bad experience, just learning curves. I literally had to start from scratch. My goal was to connect with the right people to steer me in the right direction and give me guidance on all that I needed to do to set up this business.

The struggles that I face has a lot to do with bringing the bigger vision of what I want to life. I find that I need to do better with putting myself in the right rooms to surround myself with people that can either share how they did it or take me under their wing to show me how to fly on my own. Dont get me wrong, what I’ve accomplished so far in my business and how consistent it’s been since inception has been nothing short of amazing, so I thank God everyday for the blessing of having a business that continues to thrive and grow, but there is always room for improvement. If youre not willing to be in a constant state of learning, you’ll never grow.

Im learning and growing everyday, so I strive to do that on a daily basis

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Outside of being a Personal Trainer, I’m a Sign Language Interpreter. Ive been working with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community for 19 years. Ive worked for Greater Los Angeles, Agency on Deafness, LAUSD, the Community College District, Goodwill of OC and currently DCFS for LA County.

Working as an Interpreter, gives me great joy because I am able to assist in bridging that gap between the hearing and deaf community to provide access to communication so that those with a hearing loss are privy to the same information as the hearing community.

Im proud that Ive been able to learn a new skill/language and be able to utilize it in different areas over that span of my career

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I believe having a great mentor is essential! I had a mentor when I started my interpreting career and that was a game changer for me. Having a mentor helps answer those lingering questions as well as helping you navigate uncharted territories and gain the confidence necessary to do it on your own.
Even if you don’t have a personal mentor, putting yourself in any type of networking situation and talk to people that are in the same field as you can help clear up so much confusion circulating in your head, misinformation received that can be cleared up and obtain new information that you didn’t know you needed. Networking and Mentorship are so vital when you’re new in a specific career

When I decided to get into personal training, I did not get a mentor and I didn’t network much or as much as I would have liked. I was in a position where I was getting trained so I observed my trainer, asked questioned and learned through my process and applied the information accordingly.

As I continue to venture through this business journey, I learn something new everyday and I try to apply something new and different every year to help me grow personally and professionally. So growing and learning never stops, you just have to be open and willing to absorb the information and apply it.
