Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Robinson
Hi SAM, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born into a family that offered a unique blend of cultures: my mother is from Spain, and my father is English. This contrast of fiery Mediterranean energy and a calmer, more reserved British approach shaped me into an observer from a young age. I became fascinated with how people from different cultures express themselves and interact.
My father, an illustrator, however I realized early on that drawing wasn’t my strength. Instead, he handed me a camera, and that simple gesture changed everything. The camera became my way of capturing the varied characteristics I saw around me. It wasn’t just a tool—it became a passport into other people’s worlds, a way to connect and interact with them.
While I grew up in Europe, I was always fascinated by North American culture. There was something about it that felt magnetic, and it always seemed to draw me in. After I graduated, I did some assisting before embarking on a road trip across 36 states. That journey only deepened my obsession with photography and the beauty of documenting human stories.
For many years, I was based in New York, which offered its own dynamic energy. But I found myself increasingly drawn to the light in Los Angeles—a quality of light that reminded me of Barcelona. It’s warm, golden, and alive, and it felt like it carried a language of its own. Working in LA allowed me to explore and deepen my connection to that light, which has become one of my greatest creative obsessions.
Throughout it all, my work has remained rooted in people—watching them, capturing them, and telling their stories through images.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Looking back, I can now appreciate how smooth the road has been for much of my career. It’s only in recent years, that I’ve realized how fortunate I was. Those chapters of change brought to light just how steady things had been before, even if it didn’t always feel that way at the time.
While my journey might seem relatively conventional on the surface, one of the joys of being a photographer is that every job is different. Over the past 20 years, I’ve been fortunate to work on projects that have taken me to unexpected places and introduced me to incredible people. At the time, I may not have fully realized how unique and special some of those opportunities were.
Of course, photography always comes with uncertainty—you never know where the next commission will take you or what’s around the corner. But that’s part of what makes it exciting. While the road hasn’t always been predictable, I’ve truly enjoyed the journey and the experiences it’s brought me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a photographer and director, and at the core of everything I do is people. People are the heart of my work—their stories, their individuality, and the unique moments they bring to life. My focus is on capturing the human element, whether it’s telling a powerful story in front of the camera or building a collaborative, creative environment behind the scenes.
What I’m most proud of is the connection my work fosters. Every project is an opportunity to shine a light on real, authentic experiences and to work with incredible teams who help bring those stories to life. What sets me apart is this unwavering focus on people—not just as subjects, but as collaborators in creating something meaningful and memorable. I take as much joy from the subjects I am photographing as I do the team of people working to create the project. It’s always been about the human connection for me, and I think that’s reflected in everything I do.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
The nature of this industry is that every creative interaction becomes a new avenue for growth and learning, so I’ve been fortunate to have so many people contribute to my journey in different ways.
One of the biggest turning points for me has been signing with Art Department. Having worked with agents in the past, this partnership has been a breath of fresh air. The belief and trust from the founder Jordan Shipenberg who believed in me from the start and the amazing relationship I have with Carrie Ferriter Cubarle my agent and good friend. The whole team at Art Department bring such strength, support and experience with a true sense of collaboration. It’s not just representation—it feels like a real team working together to help me grow and develop in ways I couldn’t have imagined.
Of course, I have to credit my mum and dad. It might sound cliché, but I genuinely couldn’t have done any of this without them. While we didn’t have great financial resources growing up, I never lacked support or belief in my potential. Combined with my sister who is and always has been my biggest fan, she also ran my first London studio for many years and really helped build my vision of always having kind people around us all. That unwavering encouragement has been the foundation for everything I’ve been able to build in my career.
