Community Highlights: Meet Luis Emilio Ovando and Matthew Anders of Waves.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Emilio Ovando and Matthew Anders

Hi Luis and Matthew, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
From the point of view of Matthew Anders, we were in class together both in our first year of college and something came to Matt’s head telling him to talk to me (Luis Emilio Ovando). As we started building that relationship we both realized we were good in different aspects of film. I had always had experience in video editing/post production and some on set experience, but Matt’s expertise came in the form of Pre – production. We always say the brains of the operation is Matt but the person who realizes those ideas is me. We started working on small projects together like reels and eventually got into talks of making a short film together under my old “production company” which used to be known as “Golden Cut Cinema”. When i then quickly scrapped that idea and me and Matt formed under the brand name “Waves.” we work under now. Once we finished scripting out the film “Memento Mori”, life happened. Eventually once we got the equipment needed to film, we planned our shoot days and went on set. Memento Mori took 4 days of filming each being over 10-12 hours long. But by far those days were the most fun and exhilarating to us. The next step was post production where we took all of our footage into an editing software and spend the entire month of August editing the film and making it as good as we could. We ended up premiering the film on August 30th. Since then we have been marketing the project as much as we can by putting up posters all over DTLA and our school. This takes us up to the present where we are in talks of scripting a second short film, and starting a radio show, and a photography series on our social medias.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely was not a smooth road to get to where we are today with Waves. Such as life in general, we are both full time students and at times that can get us pretty busy. Especially with Matt and I having jobs and needing to be responsible in all aspects of life especially our education.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Our organization deals in representing the unrepresented in the artistry/creative space. We want to create a new motive behind the creativity that inspires Los Angeles. We started as a film brand but branched out into all creative spaces to better represent every outlet of art that exists. We are a collective. We are known for being that outlet for under represented like minded people who before were not typically inclined to share their talents to the world but now have a way to represent art in their own respective and unique way. Brand wise we are most proud of our flagship work “Memento Mori” a short film based on real situations. We want readers to understand that creativity in the way you interpret it is not wrong if it isn’t your typical way of representing it. All creativity is art.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Staying consistent with our projects, keeping the dream alive and always creating no matter what it was.
