Conversations with Philip Cheong

Today we’d like to introduce you to Philip Cheong

Hi Philip, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started baseball at the age of 10, I fell in love with the game with my childhood friend. From then, my athleticism and love for the game allowed me to exceed rapidly which has led me getting invited to numerus high-profile armature baseball events all over North America.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being from Canada, baseball is not an easy sport to play since we can not play all year round and we also do not get the exposure that the US has. Growing up, I have picked up the sport quickly and a major set back I had was when I was 15, I got cut from the 17u Ontario Youth Team.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
For me as undersized kid from Canada, I would say the main thing that people see when they watch me play the game of baseball is my athleticism, my energy and love I have for the game. One thing that I would say that I am known for is my speed, for the 60-yard dash, my fastest record time was 6.29 seconds. Something that me and my family are most proud of in my baseball career so far is my commitment to Stanford University. The journey I took leading up to my commitment was very tough, I had a lot of setbacks but I kept pushing. Something that sets me apart from other I would say is my athleticism, I am a very twitchy athlete who can run fast and jump high. I feel like my speed and athleticism is very well shown on the baseball diamond.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up in a highly athletic and academic family, I was always into school and sports. At the age of 3, I started Taekwondo and by the age of 10 I achieved my second degree blackbelt. I would say my childhood was very unique and loving. I would always stay after school and play on the playground with my mom for hours. I always had the desire to be the best academic student in my class and I would say that’s where I became a very competitive person. Besides that, as a kid, I loved cooking which I learned from my Dad. I always spent time playing basketball outside with my brother and volleyball with my sister. I loved everything to do with outdoor activities.
