Today we’d like to introduce you to Peti Lau
Hi Peti, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Peti Lau Design is an award winning international interior designer with a full-service interior design studio headquartered in West Hollywood at the La Cienega Design Quarters in Los Angeles. I founded Peti Lau Design 19 years ago. Inspired by my travels, culture and have been living as an expat around the world. My style is a distinctive mix of global influences, artfully combining rich layers, rich colors, textures, and patterns resulting in spaces of full of personality. With projects across the globe from Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Brighton UK, Koh Samui Thailand, and Mauritius.
I started my career in Thailand with an opportunity to design a hotel restaurant. And from there a close friend’s father purchased a luxury vacation villa on the island of Koh Samui where I was living at the time. That opportunity led to designing and building a home with another client in Mauritius and Jom Tien, Thailand. After a few years when the projects completed, I decided to return home to the US, and move to New York City and study Interior Design at the New York School of Interior Design. The rest is history.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Obstacles are always there when it comes to interior design as we are literally taught in school to problem solve. Working on high end residential is intimate experience as you end up spending decent amount of time with the clients. Projects can take between 1 to 3 years to complete. It’s incredible rewarding to have the opportunity to design for client’s wellbeing and providing a service to enrichen their lives, and wellness. But it can also be challenging as time, money and emotions are involved. There are always ups and down to the job. It can be difficult at times but also very rewarding when the clients are happy with the work we’ve done.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The creative process of creating a home for someone is deeply personal. So, it’s special to develop the type of relationship that enhances their lives. The most important thing we can do as a designer is listen. Listening to the clients and being able to read between the lines. And intuitive give them something what they are desiring without words. It’s a feeling they are looking for and sometimes they don’t have the words to describe it. I feel that all good designers have that inherent gift of listening to their clients and helping them make decisions to will impact and improve their daily lives.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My family and friends who understand that being a designer you never really turn off. I think my mom has been a big supporter, encouraging me to go to school for design. The firms and designers I’ve worked with before I started my own company. Learning from all the people I’ve worked with over the years. Between the studios and the vendors that teach me the process of making their products. Being invited to factory tours, which is a great way to learn about the process and productions process. Interior Design is so vast in what you need to know. Between construction and interior architecture, materials and finish techniques, textiles and furniture, antiques, and contemporary makers. You really need to have a wide understanding of how all this comes together. On a personal level, I wake up thinking about projects when I in the design process and ideas of resolution or inspirations literary come to me in the middle of the night or when I wake up. There is no off button. I believe that my peers and colleagues have been monumental support to the success of my career. The vendors and brands believing in me, giving me opportunities to collaborate on projects together. Collectively, it’s all the people I’ve had the pleasure to work and learn with have so supportive and helping me grow and learn. I always feel like there is something new to learn. There will always be new techniques and innovative practices to improve and get better.
The design community is a fantastic group of good people who are all passionate about design, I’m grateful to be a part of it.
