Today we’d like to introduce you to T. Y. Steven Ip
T. Y. Steven, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a board certified plastic surgeon with practice locations in Newport Beach and Beverly Hills California along with a location on Park Avenue in New York City. My story starts with a humble upbringing. A first generation immigrant story growing up with 4 brothers and 2 sisters. My father came to the United States on an educational scholarship and later secured a job as an engineer. My mom was a stay at home mom taking care of 7 children. Things were financial tight and we had to take on odd jobs to help the family make ends meet. Education was ingrained in us at a very young age. Excelling in school was a way toward later success. Thus, by working hard in school along with working while attending school, I was able to pay me own way. My schooling required 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, 5 years of surgical training, and 3 years of plastic surgery training to finally become a plastic surgeon.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There was definitely struggles along the way. Coming to the United States in the late 1960’s, there were not a lot of Asians where I grew up. The general population did not have much exposure the the Asian culture, so cultural and racial issues did occur.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have a very unique practice with a bi-coastal presences. I have operated on some notable people and the media has labeled me a “Celebrity Plastic Surgeon”. That label is flattering but I don’t really consider myself a “Celebrity Plastic Surgeon”. I enjoy taking care of a wide spectrum of people and even volunteer my time to medical organizations.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
In terms of networking, meet as many people as you can. Each individual has unique experiences that you can draw from. Your mentor needs to be some you aim to be. Someone with a good moral compass along with being success in their field.
