Today we’d like to introduce you to Sion Lee
Hi Sion, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The reason that I got into music was simply because it looked incredibly intriguing. To my young eyes, seeing someone playing the guitar and receiving applause from many people just looked amazing. Later on, due to my parents’ opposition, I followed the same educational path as my peers and lived a life unrelated to music. This was until I persuaded my parents to allow me to pursue a musical lifestyle. At that time, there were no people around me who were involved in music, so what I learned from my teacher was the only musical knowledge I obtained. Two years later, I went to the military, and while looking for a school to attend afterward, I found out about the Musicians Institute. This is where my serious musical exchanges truly began. While attending the school, I played with other musicians for the first time. Ultimately this led me to meet various friends and teachers that not only gave me great experiences and learning, but I was able to build my identity as a musician.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The process of playing and sharing music with others was much more difficult than learning music itself. Until I came to the United States, there weren’t a lot of people around me who enjoyed music, so I was playing one-sided without any musical exchange. Having become accustomed to and used to this lifestyle, playing with others or sharing my music meant having to relearn from scratch and really assess my mistakes of the past. At that time, it was very exhausting and challenging, but looking back now, I believe it was a crucial step for me to succeed in a musical path.
In the process of making my music, sometimes I obsessed over theoretical aspects or tried to show things beyond my capabilities. This led me to compare myself with others and eventually get stressed. These days, I try to create the best I can within my knowledge and do not compare myself to others.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What I do involves recording, performing, and composing. My current specialty is working as a guitarist, and in the future, I plan to also work as a composer for a multitude of things. I play pop, rock, R&B, funk, fusion, and I also enjoy creating ambient or melodic sounds.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
When I was young, I didn’t particularly enjoy being in the spotlight. I was very interested in music and always dreamed of making music. Listening to rock, fusion, and bluesy musicians like John Mayer, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Andy Timmons, and Mateus Asato, was my past time and I drew lots of inspiration from them.
