Life & Work with Destiny Owusu of Brooklyn, NY

Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Owusu

Hi Destiny, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started out as an independent model born and raised from Virginia who picked up and moved to New York out of thin air. My journey in New York has been nothing but a testimony from God. Being a model with no agency wasn’t no walk in the park. I’ve been through many trials and tribulations but I’ve connected with so many great people along the way. I’ve managed myself as a model for almost 10 years and within those years I’ve been in Vogue, Essence Magazine, V Magazine walked in NYFW, shot with amazing photographers, worked with Refinery 29, and more. But when the pandemic happened it made me realize “modeling” wasn’t fun to me anymore and I was tired of “struggling” to be casted for opportunities. I took a step back and focused on what really brings me joy and that was traveling and enjoying life to the maximum.

Stepping into the “Influencer” and “Content Creation” world was seamless. I feel as though I was already doing it as a model but this time I was more intentional with my niche. I was determined to get into my travel content so I took the necessary steps to pitch myself to hotels so I could partner with them. 3 years later I’ve done over 40 hotel/resort partnerships, 2 airline partnerships, 1 cruise partnership, beauty collaborations, countless gifting opportunities from brands I love, and just finished a major campaign coming out soon. To say I’m proud is an understatement!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has NOT been a smooth road. I’m surprised I’ve lasted 8 years in New York because it really can eat you up and spit you right back out! My first couple of months in New York I was couch hopping trying to figure things out on top of solidifying a decent job. There have been countless times where I didn’t know if I was able to pay rent, let alone get groceries. Being independent in any industry equals double the work for yourself as a creative. Waiting on brands to pay you on time while having bills to pay is the most stressful thing ever. On top of that living in New York isn’t cheap. Rent is high for a closet space, a calm night out with friends can cost you a couple of hundred easily, and the list goes on.

But people don’t see the struggle, they see the end result of everything.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Everyone calls me “Miss Enjoyment” and I stand by that. I’m a huge advocate of enjoying each day as if it were your last. I love to inspire others to experience new things whether it’s with traveling, restaurants, bars, or activities. I specialize in Travel/Lifestyle content on my platform which is a little bit of everything, On top of that I have my own business as a Travel Consultant.

But wait there’s more. I’m such an explorer in New York that I created a list you can purchase of 50 Speakeasies I’ve experienced for the past 3 years. I also hold one on one Creative/Influencer Webinars where I help other creatives who want to get into Content Creation and the necessary tips a steps to becoming successful as I am.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Just myself and God.
