Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Birch
Hi Sarah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Sarah Jane Birch, my business is a barbershop called Birch Craft Barbering. I named my barbershop after the business my grandpa owned when my dad was young called ‘Birch Craft Boats’. Owning a business is challenging me in ways I didn’t imagine, but I am very grateful to be learning and growing, as I feel that’s the greatest thing we can gain from life: knowledge and experience.
My goal in building this business, and why I got into barbering, is because my main love and dream in life is to do music. I’ve been pursuing that dream for 10 years now and I needed a job that was a skill that I could utilize wherever music takes me.
I realized after 5 years in the industry that there was a lack of shops where barbers were valued, built up, and didn’t cost so much to work at – so I made a place where other barbers could have a positive working experience and not have to pay so much in booth rent, so they could pursue their goals and dreams as well. Thank you for this opportunity!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a female barber there’s always been disadvantages and scoffs from some people thinking a woman can’t be a barber or refuse to call me a barber.
I’ve never let those remarks stop me or derail my passion and love for barbering. I’ve gained so many amazing clients who do believe in me and have let the ones who don’t believe in me or would sexualize me disappear into the background.
Becoming a female business owner, at age 25. There’s been many challenges and a lot of growing pains to learn how to run a business. I’ve had people who doubt me, but I’m proud of myself for preserving. My hope is that I can serve as an example to other women, and/or aspiring young entrepreneurs like myself that it is possible.

Birch Craft Barbering is a Barbershop inspired by classic, old school, retro shops.
At Birch Craft we do haircuts, beards, and shaves. We’re known for being the biggest shop in our city, for the vibe, and love we each put into our craft.
I believe what sets my shop apart from others is the atmosphere, vibe, and style.
I’m most proud of the barbers I have working alongside me at my shop. They’re all amazing people and incredibly talented.
