Inspiring Conversations with Charles Dorsey of The Dorsey Group and Fathers and Sons Speak Foundation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles Dorsey

Hi Charles, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in Santa Ana, California, and came home to live in Compton, where I was raised and educated until I left for college. Growing up, I was always passionate about extracurricular activities, immersing myself in the arts, sports, and academics. This diverse engagement not only shaped my character but also fueled my passion for leadership and community. I gave my first speech in the 2nd grade, an experience that ignited my love for public speaking and set the stage for my future endeavors.

As I grew older, my commitment to faith and community deepened. I began my journey as an itinerant elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, where I discovered my calling as a leader and a teacher. Over the years, I have been privileged to speak at over 300 engagements and share my voice on KJLH 102.3 FM, the number one Black-owned radio station in Los Angeles. This platform allowed me to connect with the community on a deeper level and advocate for change and empowerment.

A pivotal moment in my life was the release of my book, “Fathers and Sons Speak,” which chronicles my journey of reconnecting with my father after 28 years. This deeply personal experience inspired the launch of the Fathers and Sons Speak Foundation, dedicated to encouraging healthy relationships between men and their families. My goal is to reach 100,000 men across the nation, promoting healing and unity.

To further my mission of personal and organizational growth, I founded The Dorsey Group, LLC., focusing on performance improvement strategies for individuals and organizations. This endeavor has allowed me to guide nonprofits and corporations alike in achieving their goals and enhancing their impact on the communities they serve.

In addition to my professional work, I serve as an Adjunct Professor and sit on several boards that support community development and violence prevention. These roles enable me to engage with diverse groups, fostering collaboration among faith leaders, law enforcement, and educators to drive meaningful change.

As a fun fact, when I am not inspiring men through Fathers and Sons Speak or cultivating leaders/organizations through The Dorsey Group, I enjoy purposeful singing. One of the highlights of my lifetime was receiving the honor of singing the national anthem for President Barack Obama during a town hall meeting. This moment was a powerful reminder of the importance of using our talents to inspire and serve others.

My journey has been shaped by a commitment to education and continuous growth, earning a Master of Divinity from the Claremont School of Theology, a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the University of California, Irvine, and a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership from Pepperdine University.

Today, as a happily married husband and committed father, I remain dedicated to community engagement, leadership, and mentorship, striving to be a catalyst for positive change in every aspect of my life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to where I am today has certainly not been smooth. Like many, I’ve faced my share of challenges and struggles. Growing up in Compton, I was surrounded by both opportunity and adversity. The community taught me resilience and the importance of perseverance, but it also presented obstacles that were difficult to navigate.

One of the most personal challenges I faced was reconnecting with my father after 28 years of separation. This journey was emotionally taxing and required a great deal of courage, vulnerability, and healing. It was through this experience that I learned the power of forgiveness and the importance of restoring relationships, which ultimately inspired my book, “Fathers and Sons Speak.”

Launching my foundation and my firm, The Dorsey Group, also came with its hurdles. Building these organizations from the ground up demanded not only a clear vision but also navigating the complexities of fundraising, managing resources, and leading teams through periods of growth and change. There were moments of doubt and numerous setbacks, but each obstacle taught me valuable lessons about leadership, patience, and the importance of staying true to my mission.

Balancing my professional responsibilities with my personal life has also been a challenge. As a husband and father, ensuring that I am fully present for my family while also meeting the demands of my career has required careful planning and sometimes tough choices.

Despite these struggles, each challenge has shaped me into the leader I am today, reinforcing my commitment to my faith, my community, and my purpose. The road may not have been smooth, but it has been incredibly rewarding, and I am grateful for every experience that has brought me here.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Dorsey Group and Fathers and Sons Speak Foundation?
