Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Laverty and his late father, Pat Laverty Sr.
Hi Patrick, please kick things off for us.
The story I would like to share is not of me, but of my late father – Pat Laverty Sr. and his life journey that was anchored through music. Ever since I could remember, my dad would always surround himself with music, whether it was first thing in the morning before he would head off to work, in the car on the way to church, or during the weekend where he would play his own personal songs on his guitar.
He would tell me stories of his earlier days with his friends where they would travel and perform in front of crowds, and how he would go in and out of his Scottish accent to the audiences delight.
He always had his dream of getting his own music out to the world and as his work-load began to lighten in 2018, he began working with a local studio (Studio 770) to make that happen.
Unfortunately, shortly after taking those very first steps towards his musical goal, he was diagnosed with cancer within his liver, and even more unfortunately, it was a particularly aggressive cancer.
This did not stop Pat Laverty, however. As a man with a background in medicine (nuclear medicine to be exact), he took the treatment head-on and with an incredibly strong, positive attitude. He even sought out additional treatment options and, with his oncologists, implemented those solutions to help increase his chances.
Through his treatment, he continued to produce his music professionally and made great progress, nearly finishing his very first album.
Sadly, on November 11, 2023, my father passed away, and was never able to finish his album, a goal so close to the finish line.
The rest of the family and I knew we had to see my father’s vision through, so I reached out to his producer, Shantih, and together we were able to complete his album.
Now, you can find Pat Laverty on your favorite music streaming services (Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube, Amazon, etc.) and you too can hear the music he always wanted to share.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey was fairly smooth in retrospect?
Like with any journey, his certainly had its ups and downs. As he grew through his early 20’s, his dreams of becoming a rockstar were set aside in the interest of building a career. But that dream was never forgotten. As he grew, he would always be sure to practice his skills and play from the heart, especially on weekends.
On the rare occassion, like on his 50th birthday, he would still grace an audience with his music and take the stage.
Of course, in the question of stuggle, we cannot overstate the strength he had continuing his goals through his cancer treatments.
Chemotherapy drains you of your energy, so he had to plan out his sessions at the studio to be in alignment with days where he knew he would have more energy.
His treatment changed over the years – first chemo, then Y-90, then taflinar (“chemo-in-a-pill), then surgery, then follow up chemo again. Each change was met with different challenges but he always perserversed and continued with his music right up to the very end.
What else should we know about him?
He liked to play guitar, sing, and write lyrics. His music was generally inspired by events around him (ex. birth of neice, birth of granddaughter, love, heartbreak, etc.)
His musical inspiration came from the likes of Paul McCartney, Peter Frampton, John Lennon.
From a career side, my father was well-known in the nuclear medicine industry and made an impact on anyone he worked with. He started his own nuclear imaging business in 1988 which still runs to this day, and most notably, he worked alongside a pharmaceutical company in obtaining Department of Transportation approval which has now allowed for a whole new industry to open which now services patients nationwide on a mobile basis.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how his story turned out?
His friends growing up such as Mike Cressy and Dave Green would play with him as they all grew through the ages.
He also had a lot of help from individuals at the musical stuido such as Shantih Haast and Troy Ambroff in the completion and distribution of his music.
And, of course, he has always had the love and support of his family. Now and forever.
