Check Out Esther Haltom’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Esther Haltom

Esther, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In 2001 I had just finished my BFA in Acting from the University of Washington. I was cast as several voices in the Gas Powered game Dungeon Siege II. That is really where my VoiceOver career started. After being cast as an on camera series regular in the Warner Brothers series Deception, I moved to West Hollywood full time, just blocks away from where my great grandparents raised my grandfather and uncle. I began studying with renowned voice coach Nancy Wolfson in 2008, where I honed my VoiceOver skills. I cut a couple of demos with Nancy and continued to attend workout groups with guest directors also joining VO classes every chance I got. I think continuing to immerse yourself in classes keeps you on top of your craft and helps you feel connected to your community.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to success in any career is rocky but it seems especially hard for artists. There have been several barriers along the way. Struggling to find an agent early on was one of the hardest things to overcome, but once I found the right agent things started to fall into place. Another challenging time was when the acting community was fractured due to the pandemic. Staying on course and focused and connected to other artists was difficult, however I was able to participate in Zoom table reads and get in my booth to record on my own. As actors I think it’s important to have those creative outlets. It has taken grit and determination to carve out the space I now have for my career. As the saying goes “It takes 20 years to become an overnight success.”

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve been blessed to have a diverse career in VoiceOver. I have narrated audiobooks, done animation, voiced national TV campaigns, and worked for Netflix dubbing as a series regular. Diversity is a must as a VoiceOver actor. One day I’ll have animation or video game auditions the next day it’s auditions for TV and radio spots. You just never know what you are going to be asked to do, so continuing to stay on top of your craft is important. I love all aspects of VoiceOver but I would have to say the highlight so far has been voicing Livia in Suburra. I also voiced Simonetta in Baby for 3 seasons and that series was what saw me through the pandemic when no-one was working.
