Life & Work with Stephen Ray Thomas of Beverly Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Ray Thomas

Hi Stephen Ray, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in Monterey, CA, and my journey into cinema began around the age of 14 when I developed a deep passion for the world cinema. My brother, Devin Thomas, and I would often discuss our favorite films and brainstorm ideas, which ignited our desire to pursue a career in filmmaking.

Although we didn’t consistently create projects at the start, our enthusiasm never waned. We spent countless hours writing down plots, discussing ideas, and figuring out how to bring our visions to life with the resources we had in front of us. We even shot test footage with random improvisations, often marveling at what we could achieve with our makeshift setups. Editing these clips, color grading them intensely, and uploading them to YouTube felt like showcasing the next big blockbuster—even if they were just five-minute test videos.

Eventually, our dedication paid off with the completion of our feature film, Peninsula Nights. This milestone marked a turning point for us; we went from simply dreaming about filmmaking to truly embodying it. Today, we proudly embrace our identity as filmmakers, realizing that our aspirations have transformed into tangible achievements.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey to becoming a filmmaker has certainly not been smooth. There were numerous challenges along the way that tested our resolve and creativity.

In the beginning, resources were limited. We often had to make do with what we had, using DIY methods and improvisation to achieve our vision. This meant long hours of trial and error, particularly when shooting test footage and editing without the latest equipment or software.

Another significant challenge was balancing our passion for filmmaking with other responsibilities. Finding time to work on our projects while managing personal and professional commitments was often difficult.

Additionally, gaining recognition and building an audience for our work required persistent effort. We faced the challenge of standing out in a crowded field and establishing our credibility as filmmakers.

Despite these obstacles, our passion for cinema and determination kept us moving forward. Each challenge became a learning experience, and overcoming them only strengthened our commitment to our craft. Peninsula Nights is a testament to our perseverance and dedication.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As an actor, I specialize in bringing compelling characters to life through storytelling and performance. I’m particularly known for my role as Tom LeBlanc in the feature film Peninsula Nights, which I co-created with my brother, Devin Thomas, who took on the roles of dp, writer, and director. This film marks a significant milestone in our journey from aspiring dreamers to established filmmakers.

What sets me apart is my hands-on approach to both filmmaking and acting. From early experiences with DIY equipment and shooting test footage to completing a full-length feature film, I’ve embraced every aspect of the process. My deep understanding of the world cinema and collaborative spirit define my approach, allowing me to craft authentic and resonant performances.

I’m especially proud of Peninsula Nights. It represents the culmination of years of creative exploration and is a testament to our dedication and perseverance. The film highlights my commitment to storytelling and showcases our ability to create something meaningful and impactful.

What distinguishes me in the field is my unique blend of grassroots creativity and professional execution. My background in experimenting with low-budget techniques and my dedication to authentic storytelling set me apart as both an actor and filmmaker.

How do you define success?
Success, to me, is defined by a combination of personal fulfillment, impactful work, and meaningful connections. Here’s how I view it:

Personal Fulfillment: Success means finding joy and satisfaction in my work. It’s about pursuing my passion and feeling a sense of achievement and growth from the projects I undertake.

Impactful Work: Success is also measured by the impact my work has on others. Creating something that resonates with audiences, inspires change, or simply entertains is a significant marker of success.

Meaningful Connections: Building and maintaining meaningful relationships with collaborators, mentors, and audiences is crucial. Success involves not only achieving professional goals but also fostering genuine connections and contributing positively to the community.

Perseverance and Growth: Success is about overcoming obstacles, learning from experiences, and continually evolving. It’s not just reaching a destination but growing along the journey and adapting to new challenges.

Ultimately, success is a blend of achieving professional goals, finding personal joy, and making a positive impact on others.
