Today we’d like to introduce you to Virginia Brierley.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started a love of design at a young age making my own dollhouse furniture out of sponges and wallpaper with little rubber stamps. I took a few Interior Design classes in high school and decided that is what I wanted to pursue as my career.
I studied at AiMIUAD in Miami and started working in 2004 with a fabulous South Beach designer. After moving to Los Angeles in 2006, I worked for 5 years with a boutique design firm in Beverly Hills.
After having my first son in 2011, I started my own business! As well as running my own company, I do freelance AutoCAD drawings for other prominent Interior Designers and builders.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I was very fortunate to be hired by the company in South Beach after completing my internship with them. When we moved to Los Angeles, it did not take me long to find a job. The hard part came when starting off on my own. Finding clients, networking, etc. were not things I was familiar with. It’s still not easy! My husband works in the video game industry and we have moved around quite a bit. It can be difficult to create a core client base when the potential group of clients changes so often.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I do mostly residential Interior Design. I love all aspects of the design process but am most fascinated by cabinetry design such as kitchens, bathrooms, closets, etc.
I can do anything from helping select paint colors to completely renovating someone’s home.
I would say I am known for my use of color and combining my client’s real-world items into their designs. While magazine pictures are great, they do not always show real life. I love that my clients can trust me to incorporate their treasured pieces into their space.
I am proud of my company and myself because I never give up and when I set goals, I meet them. I had a goal to become State and Nationally certified in Interior Design before I turned 30, and I did it. I always knew I wanted to have my own business, and here I am!
I am a down to earth person. There is not a lot of pretense with me. I am here to make my client’s dreams come true, not to fill a portfolio for my own benefit.
What were you like growing up?
I was perhaps the artsy type. I sang opera for a while and was even on a Disney Christmas special on TV. I loved Drama, art, photography. Anything that was expressive!
