Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Kelegian
Hi Mark, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I attended Loyola High School graduating in 1978. I graduated from the University of San Diego in 1982 with a B.A. in Literature where i played collegiate football and soccer. I then then graduated from the University of San Diego School of law in 1986. I began practicing law in 1987 and built a 15 person firm specializing in catastrophic injuries, and business disputes. Thereafter, I specialized in representing victims of sexual assault until I retired from active practice in 2005. During my career I lectured around the country, co-authored California Premises Liability for the West Group and was a legal commentor on KTLA Morning News.
After retirement, I entered the casino business. I have ownership interests in multiple casinos in Southern California and I remain the managing partner of Ocean’s 11 Casino in Oceanside.
I purchased Randy’s Donuts in 2015 after deciding that the casino business was not the right fit for my three daughters, two of whom were attending University of Southern California and the youngest was headed there. Today, I am lucky to work with my three daughters daily.
Randy’s is a family business in the truest sense of the term. My daughters focus on the company operations, marketing, branding, and work closely with our vice presidents of operations and our master baker. I focus my time on international and domestic franchising and site selection.
Our franchise system has 45 stores and is constantly growing. In the coming years, we expect to substantially increase our footprint throughout the USA and internationally. .
I live in Newport Beach with my beautiful wife Shelly of 36 years. We have three amazing daughters. I am still active in archery and competed at the Olympic Archery Trials for the 2004 and 2008 Olympics.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The Covid epidemic was a challenge as it was for everyone. The hardest part has been finding good talent and great locations. We pride ourselves on working with the best and expanding to great locations. We do not believe in expanding just for expansion sake.
Any big plans?
In recent months we have expanded or signed deals with franchisees to open stores in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Georgia, and soon elsewhere.
Internationally, we expect to announce in the next 60 days a host of new agreements throughout the world for up to 200 new stores.
Overall, we expect to have nearly 400 stores in some stage of development in the next 12 months.
We keep things the same. No exception for great donuts. That said, we have already started our expansion into new beverage and sandwich products.
