Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd Bartholomew
Hi Todd , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Its a long story! I started riding bikes at age 3 and racing BMX bikes at age 6. The team I was on was sponsored by a local bike shop that was located close to my house. Being young and eager to get the next NEW upgrade for my bike and always hanging out in front of the shop, the owner decided to put me to work sweeping floors and assembling new bikes in the basement of the shop. This was the start of my retail experience witch lead me to my entire cycling industry career.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The action sports industry is very hands on, and bicycle retail in general is very detailed and personal. Product knowledge, inventory and keeping up with the tech side of the business has always been a challenge. This was especially challenging during the pandemic when all of the CA bike shops stayed open for business.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I currently run a mobile bicycle repair business that provides on-site repairs for bicycles at the customer’s location. I travel to their homes and workplaces depending on what’s best for them. My service includes fixing flat tires, adjusting brakes and gears, replacing broken components, and addressing other mechanical issues. I specialize in private client services, personal mechanic options, component and frame consultation. I also include bike fittings for maximum performance and comfort on the bike. I’m known for my passion for the sport and wanting to share my knowledge with every customer I come across. This is what I’m most proud of and I think is what really sets me apart from others. When I see that spark in their eye, it reminds me of why I still love what I do.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Find a guru or someone you like in your industry and meet with them, study them and ask questions. Find your local professional group or association in your industry, become a member and introduce yourself. LinkedIn is a good resource or just a basic internet search is easy. Don’t be shy.
Throughout my career, I have had great mentors. One of those mentors gave me the best advice that sticks with me today. He told me “stumble forward and stay confused.” I still think of this today and it has helped shape me as an athlete and as a professional in this industry.
