Community Highlights: Meet Amanda de la Madriz of #thatmomlife coaching

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda de la Madriz

Hi Amanda, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Miami, FL, but moved to NYC after graduating college. I worked in the city for several years in Advertising, and while I loved it, the winters became too hard and the city was too much of a grind. I wanted warmer weather! LA was it.

My husband and I moved within a month, and haven’t looked back. I kept working in Advertising initially, but the industry just burnt me out. I had no inclination of anything else I wanted to do, so I began to think of who I knew or met whose life I’d like. I remembered a Life Coach I worked for while I was doing marketing for a yoga studio back in Miami, and how she just had this amazing vibe. She was always happy, nothing ever stressed her out, and she had her own business helping people. I thought, “I’m a people person too…maybe this can be something I could explore?”

In 2013 I got certified as a Life Coach and focused on helping clients make career shifts, but in 2016 I gave birth to my son and decided to become stay at home mom. However after having two kids and dealing with the world shutting down after Covid, I realized I was in chronic survival mode. I wanted to do something for myself and so I decided to complete a second certification through another school in 2022. I reopened my practice, this time though with the goal of helping moms dealing with the same issues I had been struggling with—burnout, overwhelm, boredom, disconnectedness and dysregulation.

I see now how much we need to connect with ourselves in order to be able to thrive in our lives as mothers and as women. How being selfish is actually the best thing for our families…and this is what I teach my clients. I help them build awareness around the power of their perspective, I show them how to release the mom guilt, and then we get to work on reconnecting back to oneself.

I want to be here as a guide to help other women find their way back to themselves. It’s a lifelong journey and there’s no finish line, but motherhood is an incredibly overwhelming experience and this is the answer I’ve found to be our best chance at ensuring we show up the way we want to.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I have been very lucky in my life, and have had the courage to make big decisions and enjoy changes like moving from city to city. But there are always obstacles!

Covid was particularly difficult for me (as I’m sure it was for everyone). My second child was just about to turn 1 year old when everything shut down, and since we were trying to protect my elderly father in law, we chose to isolate pretty significantly even going into 2021. I felt overwhelmed, bored, irritable, lonely, burnt out and exhausted. I literally had no time to myself and nothing filling my cup for almost three years. Plus the guilt and shame I piled on myself daily for feeling the way I did. It was actually my husband that suggested I go back to work as a Coach, and once I opened that door I started a journey that led me to trust and connect to myself in a way I never had before.

But I will say that managing a business and balancing mom life is never something I get right, 100% of the time. At the moment the biggest struggle is actually refraining from going full time as a Coach, because I’m still at home with my preschooler a few days a week and go into full mom mode after I pickup the kids from school every afternoon. It’s tough because I feel so much passion for my work and it’s so easy to fall prey to the stress of believing “I have to work” all the time. Not to mention there’s an even more conscious slow down now that it’s summer.

Is it a great problem to have? Absolutely! But frankly I struggle because my work fills me up, and so I have to be really aware of making sure I don’t burn out either.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Life Coach for Moms. I specialize in using thoughtwork to help get mothers out of survival mode, but honestly my work goes so much deeper. I help women connect back to themselves. I help them see how much power they have over their lives. I show them that they can actually believe they’re good parents, instead of bad ones. And how being selfish isn’t selfish at all—because if we’re spent, we’re going to be low on patience. We’re going to yell. We’re going to scroll on our phones. But if we ask ourselves consistently, “what do I need” and then actually give ourselves those things, we have more patience and emotional bandwidth. We can let go of things and be flexible and relaxed. We’ll feel better, and therefore be better parents.

We don’t give ourselves enough credit for the sheer stress our bodies and selves undertake when becoming parents. The noise, the overwhelm, the lack of sleep, the interrupting!!! These things take a huge and very real toll.

I am very proud of the space I create as part of my brand—supportive, caring, and genuine. Yes we can talk about wanting to toss our kids out of the car when they are arguing, or we can openly share about not wanting to play with them, or cry about feeling like a failure. My goal is to show moms that it’s all ok. Wherever you’re at, it’s okay. Be where you’re at. Support yourself and know that you’re not broken.

I work with clients 1:1 virtually, so there’s no need to be in person. My initial package is for 3 months but I actually tend to work with folks for 6 months so there is an option for longer term support as well. I like to have an initial consultation to get an understanding of what your specific struggles are so we can build a plan that’s just right for you. Sometimes we find that there’s one particular belief that you’d like to move past, and sometimes it’s a bit of everything and so week to week we have different focuses. But the most important thing is to ensure that you take that first step in taking better care of yourself by having set time to meet with me each week. That alone can truly change your life!

Who else deserves credit in your story?
At this point in my career, I can look around and see that I have created a pretty large network which I’m incredibly grateful for. A network of moms, of fellow coaches and of other business owners that I am so proud to know. These folks help me in countless different ways, and it’s so powerful to sit in the awareness that they identify me as a Life Coach. Not just a mom, not just that chick who used to work in Advertising, but a professional with something to offer. Their continued support is invaluable!
