Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Biebers.
Hi Thomas, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
How to begin my story is a challenge, as I have had a rich, full life that could take up more pages than I am allowed for this article. So, let me start with the basics. I was born in Jackson Heights, New York, and moved to San Diego, California when I was three.
My mother introduced me to the performing arts when I was just eight years old, I sang in choirs, acted in various stage productions, and appeared in a couple of San Diego based television shows in the late 1970’s.
I started my film career in front of the camera, but as I got older, I wanted to do more behind the scenes. So, in 2017 I was hired by a Las Vegas based production company to work as a producer and content developer. It was during this time that I came up with a concept for a new documentary series.
I am the son of a Holocaust survivor, or as we call it, the second generation. In 2014 I along with my cousin began to write a book about my father’s experiences during the Holocaust (he fought in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprisings). He seldom talked about the Holocaust, but when he did, it would be about the uprisings and how he despised the way the Jews are portrayed in Hollywood films about the Holocaust. Seldom do the stories tell what really happened.
So, I had wanted to do a documentary about his life. Sadly, he became ill and died prior to filming. We were able to finish the book, and ” Not Without A Fight” was published in 2017.
One day, my wife, Teresa (who is my biggest fan), came across an article in a local newspaper here in Murrieta, California. It mentioned that there was a Holocaust remembrance event taking place. So, I attended, listened to the production, then introduced myself to event organizers and explained my background. I soon found myself lecturing on my father’s story and promoting the book.
I was then introduced to other Holocaust survivors, and the motivation to tell their stories on camera became first and foremost on my mind. However, everyone I was planning to film passed away. One day I sat with the organizer of the March or Remembrance here in Murrieta, California and shared with him my frustration. He suggested that I interview the second and third-generation of Holocaust survivors. Since he heard my lectures about my father, he thought that other children and grandchildren of survivors might be able to do the same.
I came home and shared what was suggested with my wife, Teresa. In the beginning, I did not think the idea would work. After all, who would listen to us, as we did not actually experience the Holocaust?
My wife, who is Catholic and extremely close to my father, had joined a Facebook group called “Grandchildren of Holocaust Survivors.” So, I, too, joined and shared the idea. To my surprise, we had over 5,000 emails from people all over the world. From Mexico to Australia. From Germany to South Africa and all regions of the United States. There were children and grandchildren of survivors who really wanted to share their families’ stories.
My wife and I came up with the name “Generation to Generation.” We approached the owner of the production company I was working for, and they passed on the idea. Teresa and I resigned from the company we were working for and started B to B Productions LLC.
Any success I have experienced is because of my mother’s guidance when I was younger and my wife’s support today.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like all journeys, the road has not always been smooth. Along the way, you make decisions that you would long regret, but I made it a point not to let bad decisions control my quest for success.
One of my biggest struggles is not allowing others to control my dreams and ambitions. It did take me some time to figure out that those who doubt your abilities or aspirations, are lacking these traits. Those who tried to squash my dreams did not have any of their own. That was probably my biggest challenge, trying to ignore people who I perceived as being jealous.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
B and B Productions, LLC is a full-service production company. But it is Generation to Generation that we are most proud of. As part of the second generation myself, there is a personal motive behind each film. Generation to Generation is not just a series about the Jewish Holocaust. We want to educate everyone what can happen when racism and hatred at all levels is allowed to foster.
I am also very proud of the diversity of our team. While experience is always a plus, what we seek is people who have a desire to learn how the film industry works. Since we are a small team, most who join us have the opportunity to learn many aspects of the business.
The proceeds from every commercial produced, actors reel created, film directed, goes to help us produce more episodes of Generation to Generation.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
The first story was about my father, Casimir Bieberstein, a survivor of the Warsaw Ghettos. Together with my cousin, D.W. Duke (who is an Executive Producer for Generation to Generation) wrote a book titled “Not Without A Fight: The Story of A Polish Jew’s Resistance”. This is a true story of my father’s journey to become a Resistance Fighter, Intent on seeking justice for wrongs while attempting to survive the atrocities of the Holocaust.
Not Without A Fight is available on Amazon.
