Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke deRosa.
Hi Brooke, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up always loving the piano. Much to the chagrin of my teachers, I never practiced. I would write my own songs and, later, essentially, music to accompany different plays and books. I should have known back then I would end up as a composer, but it never occurred to me until much later in life. I was content being a performer in musical theater, opera and plays. It wasn’t until later I started writing things for myself and my friends to perform in. Separately, I was already composing for films. I think now I compose what could be termed as “cinematic musical theater.”
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not. There has always been great difficulty along the way. As I’m sure everyone finds, there was no one who wanted to hand me a career. Women were not really in this fields when I started, so it was much harder to establish myself as a professional.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a composer who composes both for live theatre as well as for film. I am also a conductor, performer, director, producer, and filmmaker. I enjoy having many different “hats” that I can alternate between. I think I am most proud of my musical show, “Alice in Wonderland,” which premiered April 2024 at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre here in Los Angeles.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I really enjoy scoring films for Lifetime. You may have heard my music at some point!
