Harlee Balajadia

Hi Harlee, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Hi there! I’m Harlee, a creative whose journey exemplifies the transformative power of artistry and the boundless potential of creativity. I am a full-time creative, thriving in diverse roles that span the realms of music education, professional performance, and arts administration.

From the bustling corridors of a middle school music classroom to the grand stages of professional choirs, I’ve embraced every opportunity to express themselves creatively, whether through teaching, performing, or facilitating community engagement.

But my journey wasn’t always smooth sailing. Like many creatives, I’ve faced the challenges of proving their worth in a competitive industry. Yet, through persistence, passion, and purpose, I’ve discovered my unique value and learned to embrace their individuality as my greatest asset.

Today, as I reflect on my journey, I’m grateful for the lessons learned and the growth experienced along the way. I understand that success doesn’t happen overnight and that each step of the journey is a valuable part of the process. Through commitment, resilience, and a supportive community, I continue to carve out a fulfilling career that not only sustains myself financially but also brings me immense joy and fulfillment.

As I continue to push boundaries, challenge norms, and leave my mark on the ever-evolving landscape of creativity, my story serves as an inspiration to aspiring creatives everywhere. It’s a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the unwavering belief in the transformative power of living a creative life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey of creativity has been far from smooth sailing for me. It’s been more like navigating a winding path through a dense forest, with twists, turns, and obstacles at every corner. But in the midst of these challenges, I’ve discovered invaluable lessons that have shaped my path in profound ways.

One of the most significant realizations I’ve had is that true wisdom often stems from lived experiences alongside formal education. Through facing obstacles head-on and learning from them in real time, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of myself and my craft.

Another hurdle I’ve faced is the temptation to compare my journey to others. As a queer, brown, first-generation Filipino, I’ve encountered preconceived notions about my abilities and limitations. Overcoming these perceptions has required me to stay true to my genuine voice and break free from the constraints that society may impose.

Being a creative within the Asian community has also presented its own set of challenges. There’s often a stigma attached to pursuing creative endeavors, with many believing that it’s not a viable path for stability or long-term sustainability. However, I’ve been determined to challenge these stereotypes and redefine what it means to be a successful creative.

Embracing my uniqueness has been a pivotal milestone in my journey. Instead of conforming to predetermined molds, I’ve learned to celebrate the qualities that set me apart. This journey of self-acceptance and humility has been ongoing, shaping my perspective and approach to creativity.

Every step of this journey has been an opportunity for growth and reflection. Along the way, I’ve been fortunate to connect with mentors, collaborators, and fellow travelers who have enriched my experience and inspired me to keep pushing forward.

While success may not be a destination but rather a continuous journey of self-discovery, I’ve found immense fulfillment in sharing my passion for creativity with others. Whether through music, teaching or simply connecting with like-minded individuals, I’ve embraced the privilege of making a positive impact in the world around me.

As I continue down this uncertain road, I do so with a sense of humility and gratitude, knowing that each struggle and triumph has contributed to my growth as a creative individual. It’s through these challenges that I’ve uncovered new layers of resilience, determination, and purpose, guiding me towards a future filled with endless possibilities.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Ah, where to begin! Well, when you ask a creative what they do, it’s like opening Pandora’s box—it’s a world of possibilities! But to break it down, I’d say I wear three main hats: I’m a Tenor Vocalist, a Music Educator, and an Arts Administrator.

As a professional musician, my voice takes me on quite the journey. From singing in professional choirs to solo gigs, church performances, and even touring with an acapella group across the nation, I’ve had the privilege to explore various musical avenues. Growing up in a 1st-Generation Filipino American household, music was ingrained in my culture. Thanks to supportive family members and mentors, I’ve been singing since I could talk. And now, I’m living the dream of making music my full-time gig.

In my music classroom, I get to live out another part of my dream—teaching and empowering students through the magic of music. My goal isn’t just to teach music notes but to mentor students into becoming better human beings through self-awareness and creativity. One of my mentors once said, “I don’t just teach music. I teach people—through music.” It’s a motto I’ve taken to heart and one that guides me every day.

And then there’s my role as an arts administrator. Here, I get to manage not just students but also adults, empowering them to realize their full potential and impact through music. It’s all about seeing people’s character and harnessing their talents to make a difference in the lives of others.

What makes me most proud is the authentic connections I’ve forged along the way. Those in my life are drawn to my genuine, positively sassy self (as I like to call it!). Whether it’s through singing, teaching, or my organizational work, I’ve been blessed to leave a legacy of impacting lives. And that’s what it’s all about—cultivating a cohesive impact through our true selves and supporting each other along the way.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Los Angeles, a city of contrasts and opportunities. What I find most captivating about this dynamic metropolis is its status as the Entertainment Capital of the World. It’s a place where creativity thrives, where countless individuals are driven by the shared mission of entertaining and inspiring audiences through various mediums.

Living here means residing at the epicenter of innovation and cultural expression. Whether it’s within the confines of renowned theme parks, prestigious choral ensembles, or the bustling cityscape, there’s an undeniable energy that permeates the air—a palpable sense of creativity and possibility.

However, amidst the glitz and glamour, there are challenges to contend with. The competitive nature of the city can sometimes create a cutthroat environment where individuals vie for recognition and opportunity. Despite being instrumental in shaping global entertainment and culture, there can be a sense of under-appreciation and under-valuation among those who contribute to its vibrancy.

Moreover, the relentless pace of life in Los Angeles can be both exhilarating and exhausting. As residents, we often find ourselves caught up in the frenetic rhythm of the city, constantly striving to keep pace with its demands and expectations.

Yet, despite these challenges, there’s an undeniable allure to Los Angeles—a magnetic pull that draws people from all walks of life. It’s a city where dreams are born and realized, where ambition and creativity intersect in remarkable ways. And for that, I remain deeply inspired and grateful to call Los Angeles home.
